I am a new member of my local volunteer fire company. I am very interested in helping out as much as possible. I have decided to talk to my cheif about trying to or helping out on writing up a grant for a new heavy rescue unit which we are in need of. Is it too late to get in on the FEMA grant or should we set our sights for next year?

You'll have to wait till next year on this one. You can get with your state or look on the net for other grants but most of them do not pay out as big at the FEMA grant.

too late...for 2005
Go to www.firegrantsupport.com for information about the DHS 'grants' programs.

Both sites contain good information regarding grants.
It is too late for 2005 and the application period for 2006 (if there is one) will most likely be sometime late spring.
Best of luck.--

Definitely do some research around the forums and in the Program Guidance documents before deciding on making such an application. Heavy Rescues are a Priority 2 truck in the vehicle matrix, and odds are it will be many years before one is ever awarded again. The competition is too stiff for Priority 1 trucks. The last truck lower than a Priority 1 that was awarded to the best of my knowledge was in 2003, and the last true Heavy Rescue awarded was 2002 to my department.writing up a grant for a new heavy rescue unit which we are in need of
But regardless of choice of project, you'll still need to do your homework with the program in general, and you've come to the right spot for information. Fire away with questions when you have them and they'll get answered as quick as someone can hop on here.
Good luck and happy hunting.
