    LOS ANGELES, CA:
    MAJOR EMERGENCY STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Wednesday, August 31, 2005, at 0254 hours (2:54 A.M. PDT), nineteen companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, one Deputy Chief, one Assistant Chief Officer Command Team, six Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, two Battalion EMS Supervisors, two LAFD Rescue Ambulances, three Arson Units, Emergency Air 1, and one Hazardous Materials Squad, under the direction of Assistant Chief Ralph Terrazas, responded to a Major Emergency Structure Fire at 8405 South Pershing Drive in the Westchester area. First units on the scene reported a four-story office building with smoke showing from the fourth floor. On the fire floor, Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and heat in the center hallway portion of the floor leading to the seat of the fire. Using handlines to make an aggressive attack on the fire in the hallway and offices, Firefighter confined the fire to fourth floor and attic area of the “Westgate Center” and extinguished the fire in fifty-six minutes. To help control and extinguish the interior fire, Firefighters on the roof cut several ventilation holes through the lightweight concrete roof to detect the progression of the fire in the attic and assist with the ventilation of heat, smoke, and gases through controlled channels. Two Fire Captains suffering from smoke inhalation/heat exhaustion were transported to Cedars-Sinai Hospital in good condition and no other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is listed as under investigation and fire damage is still being tabulated.

    The Chicago Firefighter's Best Friend

"The Chicago Firefighter’s Best Friend" will be the first book to document the role and tradition of Chicago firedogs through real life stories, history, and photography. It will appeal to firefighters, dog lovers, and Chicagoans. We hope to have over 200 pictures and at least 100 firedog narratives assessing the important role dogs have played and continue to play in Chicago firehouses. A percentage of the proceeds generated from book sales will be donated to a charitable organization which assists victims of fires.
