*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

UNITED KINGDOM
LONDON, ENGLAND

MONDAY 5 SEPTEMBER

Chiswick - flat fire

Firefighters were called to a fire in a flat on Wellesley Road in Chiswick last night. The fire is thought to have been caused by an unattended pan on the hob. A small amount of the five roomed flat was damaged by the blaze. No smoke alarm was fitted in the flat and an older man was woken by fire crews. Station Commander Brian Walker said “If there had been a working smoke alarm he would have become aware of the fire. Smoke alarms save lives and without the neighbours noticing the smoke and calling the brigade this incident could have been a lot worse.” The brigades 'Be Safe and Sound' urges people to take advantage of free home fire safety checks available from the Brigade to reduce their risk from fire. Local firefighters will identify potential fire hazards in the home and the check includes the installation of a free smoke alarm where necessary. They are available whatever type of property you live in. If you would like a visit or would like to arrange a free home fire safety check on behalf of a member of your family or a friend, or know of someone at risk, please check with them first and contact the Fire Brigade on free phone number 0800 0 28 44 28. For more information see www.london-fire.gov.uk/*homesafetychecks The brigade was called at 2238 and the fire was under control by 2254. Firefighters from Chiswick fire station attended.
