    Default cpol

Maybe someone can make sense of this. I always here people talking about dod jobs being easy to get with military background. I am in the army reserves right now as a firefighter and apply every week on cpol and never get any offers. But I find out that someone that works on the base with no experience or any certs some how gets the job? I dont understand this I thought I might have an advantage over some front gate guard? Maybe not? Let me know what you guys and gals think.

Many DoD Fire Department Jobs (especially USAF Civilian positions) have a mandate attached as a condition of hiring- that you are NOT a reservist. (YES! Believe it or not!) This is because of low staffing and/or minimum manning requirements, and that they do not want to deal with you getting deployed. Perhaps this is the reason?? You need to read each and every paragraph on the job announcements very carefully- boring I know, but you catch all kinds of things.

Here is a part of a job announcement for a Fire Protection Inspector for the USAF: Note item #4.

    OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS:

    1. Incumbent of this position must perform regular firefighting
duties as needed. Must participate in the firefighter physical
    fitness program.

    2. This position is designated by the Air Force as a Testing
Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force civilian drug testing
program. As a mandatory requirement for employment in this TDP, the
incumbent is to (a) refrain from the use of illegal drugs and (b) if
required, submit to urinalysis testing. The selectee must sign
statements acknowledging the position is identified as a TDP.

    3. The incumbent of this position must be certified by the DoD Fire
and Emergency Services Fire Fighter Certification system as Fire
Officer III, Fire Instructor II, Fire Inspector III, and HAZMAT
Incident Commander, and Airport Fire Fighter.

    4. This is a key position. Incumbent must be removed from their
military recall status if alternatives for filling of the position
during an emergency are not available.

    5. Required to perform TDY and fly by military or civilian aircraft.
    6. Employee is assigned to 60-hour workweek and required to work one
24-hour shift weekly and/or extended hours to support Fire Operations
    as Senior Fire Officer/Incident Commander.

    7. Special Retirement Provisions Authority: Per OPM Letter dated 26
Jun 89 and DOD Memorandum dated 31 Aug 89, one of the following
    applies:
"Loyalty Above all Else. Except Honor."

i would agree but half of the people in my unit are dod firefighters. Most of them tell me its because i dont have veterans preference. Maybe this is why. I guess i am better off getting my medic license and going to a local department.

    I said many, not all.......

Additionally, this is a fairly newer rule....many guardsmen already "in" were grandfathered.
