*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

UNITED KINGDOM
LONDON, ENGLAND

TUESDAY 6 SEPTEMBER

Wembley – gas cylinder blaze

Around forty firefighters were called to a blaze at an office and warehouse building on Carlyon Road in Wembley late last night. Gas cylinders have been confirmed at the incident and an exclusion zone will remain in the area throughout the day. Fire crews and Police evacuated around eighty local residents as a precautionary measure because some gas cylinders can explode when heated. One person left the building before the brigade arrived and was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. Crews are making steady progress and will remain at the scene throughout the day. The cause of the fire is not yet known. The Brigade was called at 2126 and the fire was under control by 0353. Crews from Wembley and surrounding fire stations are attending the incident.

East Ham – seven rescued
Firefighters were called to a blaze at a shop on High Street in East Ham early this morning. Upon arrival at the scene crews were faced with a severe fire in the shop and a number of people who had climbed out onto a flat roof at the rear of the property. Further crews were requested to the scene resulting in around forty firefighters attending. Three men, three women and one child were rescued from the roof and brought to safety unharmed. The ground floor of the building was completely gutted, but crews managed to stop the fire from spreading to adjoining buildings. The occupiers of the flat on the second floor of the three storey building told how they were alerted to the fire after their smoke alarm began sound. The cause of the fire is being investigated. The Brigade was called at 0136 and the fire was under control by 0551. Crews from East Ham and surrounding fire stations attended the incident.

LOS ANGELES, CA:
TRENCH RESCUE:

On Tuesday, September 06, 2005, at 0939 hours (9:39 A.M. PDT), eleven companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, one Battalion Chief Officer Command Team, two Urban Search and Rescue Teams, one Battalion EMS Supervisor, three LAFD Rescue Ambulances and other city and state agencies, under the direction of Battalion Commander Jose Sanchez-Cronenbold, responded to a reported trench rescue at 2603 North Commodore Street in the El Sereno area. First units on the scene reported a single family dwelling on a hillside with workers reporting a person trapped in a trench in the backyard below a retaining wall that was being erected. After confirming that only one worker was missing or trapped in the collapsed trench that was approximately twenty-five feet long and up to six feet deep, Firefighters immediately began the arduous and delicate task to reach the victim that was buried up to his face in mud and dirt on the steep hillside. Clearing mud and dirt from around the victims face and neck, an assessment was made and the forty-five year old male worker was declared dead on the scene. After interviewing several workers on the scene, Firefighters were able to ascertain that the victim had been completely buried for at least fifteen minutes or more before a 911 call was made and that workers had tried to rescue the trapped victim prior to the arrival of the Los Angeles Fire Department and were only able to expose his head. No other injuries were reported and the cause of the trench collapse is under investigation by Cal/OSHA and other Los Angeles City agencies.
