Just curious as to what ratio of grant proposals submitted to successful grants was? I could look through the last few years of data, but this was easier.
We applied 4 times, received 4 awards.![]()
4 tries, 0 awards? 4 tries, 1 award? 4 tries, .......
Any departments not even trying (why on earth not??![]()
![]()
)?

22,000 applications, 5,400 awards for this year. Considering there are over 35,000 department in the country, that leaves about 1/3 of the departments not applying. many are not doing so because they feel they can't demonstrate the need, many more are municipally controlled and the local government won't agree to put any money towards matching if the award was given, so they department can't even apply.
I feel for the latter, which is why in a couple of cases I've taken on city hall. While I can't guarantee an award for anyone, I can sure guarantee that not applying will make sure you don't win one. Some politicians only look at what it will cost instead of what the cost-benefit is when something is 80%, 90%, or even 95% off retail price. All they see is the matching funds and what they could spend them on instead of the fire department. If anyone finds themselves in this situation, drop me a line. There are several ways of dealing successfully with this situation. I think it's irresponsible to not even attempt to improve the FD serving your citizens.

Yesterday I received the call from our congressman for about $15,000. I wonder if we'll have to fight tooth-and-nail again this year!

3rd time's the charm for us.
5 Applications: 2001-(Awarded); 2002 -(Awarded); 2003 -(Computer denied); 2004 -(DJ'd on Feb. 03, 2005); 2005 -(Awarded). Last 3 attempts were for a 75' quint, so I guess "3rd time's the charm." holds true here. Note that each go around we narrowed in on the win until finally succeeding. Each attempt on the quint saw the narrative get qualitatively better by at least a factor of two, so don't give up, guys and gals. More supporting data, more relevant statistics, and a tighter narrative all contributed to the final success. And my following the suggestions and guidance of Brian, Kurt, and Alana also made the material difference. Please don't ever give up, just hone your efforts, and you'll make it the next time.

The department tried (very poorly) in 2004 and didn't make it past the computer (entire application was a mess). I decided to take over the grant last November and they were awarded this year in the 1st round.

But as more people get the education on how everything works and what is being looked for, it is possible to hit the priorities and still not make the computer cutoff. It just depends on what people are going for. I think there are a few thousand departments that hit the priorities for vehicle requests, but there are close to 6,000 more requests than there are awards.
Speaking of which, only about $20 million left in the vehicle category. 822 given out for $144,435,231 through Round 4.
