*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

UNITED KINGDOM
LONDON, ENGLAND

FRIDAY 9 SEPTEMBER

Flooding in west and south-west London

Fire crews were very busy dealing with the aftermath of flash flooding in West and South-West London. The Brigade's emergency control centre received over 1200 calls, double the usual number, including more than 500 calls to deal with incidents such as pumping out flooded basements.

Leyton – cylinder fire
Around 30 firefighters were called to a blaze at a car breakers and storage yard on Argall Avenue in Leyton yesterday. The fire started in a car breakers and storage yard which was partly damaged by fire. An acetylene cylinder was found at the scene. Some gas cylinders can explode when heated and as a result a 200 metre exclusion zone was established as a precautionary measure. Fire crews and Police evacuated around two hundred local residents. The fire is out but fire crews will remain at the scene throughout the day cooling the cylinder. The cause of the fire is not yet known The brigade was called at 0947. Firefighters remain at the scene.

Plaistow – cylinder fire
Fire crews attended a blaze in a disused building of two floors on Abbey Street in Plaistow last night. Half of the ground floor was damaged by fire. A gas cylinder was confirmed at the scene and an exclusion zone was put in place as a precautionary measure because some cylinders can explode when heated. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The brigade was called at 2032 and the fire was under control 2330. Firefighters from Plaistow, East Ham and Stratford fire stations attended the incident.
