Be a National Registry-Certified Paramedic or EMT-Intermediate/99.

Possess a current, valid driver's license at the time of appointment.

Pass a written Paramedic/Firefighter entry-level examination.

Pass medical and psychological examinations.

The DC Fire/Emergency Medical Services Department is currently recruiting qualified National Registry-Certified Paramedics and EMT-Intermediates/99 to cross-train and serve as dual-role Paramedic/Firefighters.
Successful applicants will be required to maintain Paramedic or EMT-Intermediate/99 certification for the duration of their employment with the DC Fire & Emergency Medical Services Department.

All applicants to become a Paramedic/Firefighter must be National Registry-Certified Paramedics or EMT-Intermediates/99, take the Paramedic/Firefighter Entry Level Examination, pass a physical abilities test, and pass psychological and medical examinations before being eligible to join a Firefighter Recruit Class at the DC Fire/EMS Department Training Academy.

Paramedic/Firefighter Entry-Level Examinations are administered by the DC Office of Personnel. Exam dates are scheduled based on the number of qualified applicants.

To be scheduled for a Paramedic/Firefighter Entry-Level Examination, you must submit a formal job application. Job announcements and online applications are available on the DC Office of Personnel website under “employment opportunities.”

Qualified applicants will be assigned a test date and notified in advance by the DC Office of Personnel. Notification will include appointed test date, time and location. Only those applicants who score a minimum of 70% of correct answers, or above, will be placed on the hiring register. Selections for appointment will be made based on rank order and placement on the hiring register. Applicants may take the examination twice in the same month and the register will remain open for this period.

On exam day, qualified applicants:

Must present their exam notification for entry to the testing facility.
Must present a valid form of ID, such as a current driver's license or official DC or state photo ID.
Must be present and seated in the testing facility by the time testing is scheduled to being. No late arrivals will be allowed to take the exam.
Must NOT bring calculators or any electronic spelling or grammar aides to the testing facility. These items are not permitted.
Must turn in all materials at the end of the testing period. No testing materials may be removed from the testing facility.
