    CNN

It seems a bus full of evacuees from the storm pulled over to the side of the road and allegedy 'exploded' this could of course be a rapidly developing fire or a fuel tank explosion...doesn't seem to have been a Terrorist incident, thankfully the early reports of many dead have also been downgraded to one fatality.

CNN is reporting only one fatality on their website, but on the most recent radio news upate, the CBS correspondant is reporting at least 20 fatalities from the fire. The vicitims were mostly elderly evacuees.

Regardless, it is a tragic story, and my prayers go out to everyone involved.

Do you really believe the news right away when they say explode, explosion, or exploded? I have yet to see a vehicle just explode, unless of course it was bombed (then it was a bomb that exploded), or maybe a good TV show like the A-Team.

Will these poor people be factored in as hurricane deaths? Scarey the ramifications that these massive storms have.

It appears oxygen cylinders from the elderly on board becam involved with the fire resulting in the explosions.

    Thanks Trainer for the link.

I just saw that on the news while I was on break. Holy crap, it looks like it was in a missle attack.

Most of the buses of this type use an air suspension, and can suddenly "explode" when components fail. It's simply like a tire blowing when exposed to fire, but nonetheless can be pretty impressive. Fox is reporting up to 20 dead.

It did say 1 person earlier before the story developed more. Reguardless of how many though may they rest in peace.

Erm.... coming from a City that has seen more Bombs explode on it's streets than most (in both war and peace) and having attended a few myself...I tend not to be so surprised by the terms explode, exploded or explosion.

Sadly, when we here such reports on the News here, they tend to be true.

I guess no one really read what I wrote. I mentioned that bombs explode. That I believe, but when the news just comes out and says a bus has exploded, I tend to be skeptical.
    1. Autos just don't "explode on their own"....however gas tank can rupture.
    2. Other devices can cause an explosion, because as I have said before, that is what they do...ie:bombs
    3. My overall feeling is that the news, believe it or not, sometimes seems to over exagerate the truth. And that is fact!

Now if it was the oxygen bottles that ruptured then yes I could go with something like.....There was an explosion on a bus. This caused the bus to catch fire and burn....etc...
    Does anyone understand this?

There were multiple fatalities in the bus fire. Homeland Security has taken over the investigation and removed the bus with the bodies in it to another location to complete its investigation. The freeway was grid locked for hours.

A lot of preparations are in the works for this hurricane and the storms it will blow north into Texas. Many lessons were learned by Hurricane Katrina.

Please keep the brothers and sisters of the Texas fire service in your prayers.

    Stay safe!

Last I heard 20 people had perished on the bus, a lot of elderly people being evacuated. Apparently the bus caught fire and the evacuees oxygen tanks fueled the inferno. Being elderly Im sure it was hard to evacuate when it can fill so quickly with smoke.

Stay safe all those down south!

24 elderly in the bus died. 43 passengers were escaping Hurricane Rita from a nursing home in a Houston suburb. At least one has critical burns in the hospital. The fire started in the wheel well of the bus. Three explosions were due to fire in the bus causing oxygen tanks the elderly had with them to explode. Horrific story. I pray for all involved.

They certainly should be. Unfortunately, I'm sure it will not be the last tragic story over the next few days.

Apparently the bus was held out of service for an expired safety sticker. It was pressed back into service after the Gov of Texas waived most conditions so buses could be used to move people out of harm's way.
