UNITED KINGDOM
LONDON ENGLAND

MONDAY 19 SEPTEMBER

Battersea – two taken to hospital after house fire
An older man and woman were taken to hospital following a fire at a house in Marney Road, Battersea, last night. The couple managed to escape before the Brigade arrived to deal with the fire, which is believed to have been started by an electric fire placed too close to flammable material. There was no smoke alarm fitted in the house which may have given the occupants an earlier warning of the fire. The Brigade was called at 1958 and the fire was under control by 2057. Crews from Clapham, Battersea, Tooting, Brixton and Chelsea fire stations attended the incident.

Islington – man rescued in flat fire
A man was rescued from his bedroom by firefighters at a fire in Colne House, Offord Road, Islington, last night. The Brigade was alerted by a neighbour who smelt smoke coming from the third-floor flat. The fire is believed to have started when a toaster was left unattended and no smoke alarm was fitted, which may have given the man time to escape before the Brigade arrived. The Brigade was called at 2342 and the fire was under control by 0002. Crews from Islington fire station attended the incident.

*THIS DATE IN NEW ENGLAND FIRE RESCUE HISTORY*- Compiled by J.R. Bolduc (NH Statewide 91) n1qgs@yahoo.com

On September 19th:

1680
- Boston - MA - Old South Meeting House - Fire in a private room in the clock tower

1874 - Fall River - MA - The holocaust known as the Granite Mill fire occurred in the early morning of Saturday. It is the most appalling disaster in the history of our cotton manufacture. The barn shaped roof was the sixth story of the mill; the only exit was the staircase in the tower of the mill. When the fire occurred it quickly cut off access to the tower and operatives in the sixth floor were obligated to jump from the windows to save their lives. In attempting this method of escape thirty operatives were killed and many more suffered serious and life long injuries. The fire is supposed to have been caused by a friction spark which kindled some cotton; the fire department ladders were not long enough to reach the sixth floor and fire nets were not available.

1896 - Berlin - NH - Berlin Manufacturing Company destroyed by fire

1898 - York - ME - Lightning strike and fire destroys farm buildings

1951 - Carroll (Fabyans) - NH - White Mountain Hotel - 3/4 story T-shaped 250x300 hotel leveled by suspicious fire (Former Second Fabyans House) (First Fabyans House burned while under construction in 1

1966 - Londonderry - NH - Pillsbury Road - Woodmont Orchards - Cooling system shed fire spread to attached apple storage plant warehouse(barn) - 3 towns mutual aid

1980 - Fitchburg - MA - Water Street - Explosion of 3 tanks and fire destroyed Great American Chemical plant - 5 firefighters and 4 civilians injured - 3,000 residents evacuated

Notable incidents beyond New England

1851
- Oswego - NY - Large stone building of the Marine Railway heavily involved in flames, adjoining railway machinery building also aflame - Huge Ontario Grain warehouse threatened

1851 - New York - NY - 39th Street near 10th Ave - Wooden shanty destroyed by fire and spread to an adjacent dwelling causing heavy damage

1676 - Jamestown - VA - Jamestown is burned down during Bacon's Rebellion
