Firefighters Check Smoke Alarms Upon Pizza Delivery

Free Pizza Goes To Those With Working Detectors

    POSTED: 6:03 pm CDT October 5, 2005
    UPDATED: 6:21 pm CDT October 5, 2005
DES MOINES, Iowa -- Des Moines firefighters are hoping pizza will help prevent fire deaths.
Those who call for a Pizza from the Papa Johns at 2601 E. Euclid Ave., will deliver not only get their pizza, but the fire dept will also check your smoke detectors.
The inspections will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, and residents must live in the Papa Johns delivery area to qualify.
The fire department said it is doing the checks to save lives.
"The significance of tonight is we will be able to get into people's homes, see if they have detectors and make sure those detectors are working," said Brian O'Keefe, of the Des Moines Fire Department.
Those who have a working smoke detector get their pizza for free. Those who don't will have to pay for their pizza, and the fire department will install a free smoke detector.
    Smoke Detectors Now Talk
A new kind of smoke detector aims to better alert children of a fire.
The Kid-Smart Vocal Smoke Alarm is a unit pointed toward a child's bed that records a familiar voice as the alarm. Studies by the University of Georgia show children are more likely to wake up to a voice.
The alarm tells a child to wake up and continues with personal instructions on how to escape the home.
"I would like to put my recorded message on there and test my kids at home It's exciting as far as I'm concerned in teaching fire prevention. It's an exciting new technology," said Mike Whitsell, of the West Des Moines Fire Department.
Because the patent on the vocal alarm is pending, it cannot yet be endorsed by the fire department. The alarm can be purchased online at Kidsmartvsa.com.

The title of the article almost made it sound like the FD is going to be delivering pizzas.

We did this last year for FPW. We staged the engine at the pizza joint, and when a delivery request came in for town, we made the delivery.

If you had a working smoke detector, your pizza was free.

If you had a smoke detector, but battery was missing or dead, we hooked you up with a battery.

If you had no smoke detector, we installed one.

In either of the latter two cases, you paid for your pizza. It was quite a success. In fact, in some places where the smoke detectors worked fine, the residents thought so much of the plan that they gave us donations that were higher than what the cost of their pizzas would have been!

However, we did not publicize this ahead of time. Folks would've taken the batteries out of their remotes and put them in the detectors until we left.....
