Rotherhithe – fuel barge and tugs sink

A diesel fuel barge and two tugs sank in the River Thames by Cherry Garden Pier, Rotherhithe, early this morning. The Brigade is standing by while salvage operations are being carried out. The Brigade was called at 0130 this morning and crews are still at the scene.

New Eltham – café gutted by fire
A single storey café in Avery Hill Park, Avery Hill Road, was gutted by fire last night. Four fire engines and over 20 firefighters were at the scene. Fire investigators are at the scene trying to determine what started the fire. The Brigade was called at 0006 and the fire was under control by 0207.

Haringey – school fire
Around fifty firefighters attended a fire at a primary school on Crowland Road in Haringey today. Approximately 350 children and 40 members of staff were safely evacuated. The cause of the fire, which has caused substantial damage to the building has been investigated and is thought to have started accidentally. Fire crews will remain at the scene throughout the evening to ensure the area is completely safe. The Brigade was called at 1240. Crews from Tottenham and surrounding fire stations are attending the incident.

Acton – industrial fire
Six fire engines and around thirty firefighters fought a blaze in an industrial estate on Cowley Road, Acton in the early hours of this morning. An industrial unit of two floors in the complex was completely destroyed by the fire. The brigade was called at 2344 and the fire was under control by 0257. Fire crews from Acton, Hammersmith, North Kensington and Chelsea fire stations attended the scene. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Forest Hill – two rescued from hostel fire
Two people were rescued from a fire in a hostel on Winterstoke Road, Forest Hill in the early hours of this morning. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus assisted one woman from the first floor and one male from the second floor via the internal staircase. The fire damaged half of the two storey hostel. Two other people escaped before the Brigade arrived. The Brigade was called at 0146 and the fire was under control by 0243. Fire crews from Forest Hill fire station attended the fire, which is still under investigation.

Whitechapel – man rescued from hostel fire
A man was rescued from a fire in a hostel on Whitechapel Road in Whitechapel this morning. Firefighters rescued the man from the first floor and he was taken by London Ambulance Service crews suffering from smoke inhalation. The blaze damaged a small amount of one of the flats in the six storey block. It is believed that it was started by a discarded cigarette. The brigade was called at 0319 and the fire was under control by 0352. Fire crews from Whitechapel fire station attended the incident.

1869 - Canton - CT - Recorded over 12 inches of rain - Known as "Saxby's Gale" or The Great New England Rainstorm and Flood. Great Wind And Tide Damage in along the Maine coast. Flooding occurred throughout New England - The "October Gale" hit Cape Cod and the Island. 40 fishing ships washed shore On Cape Cod, 57 Men killed Foot and a half of snow fell at Middletown CT.

1861 - Concord - NH - Main Street, Centre Street, Bridge Street - Day's Marble Works, Merrimack House (Hotel Union) destroyed by fire

1948 - Nashua - NH - West Pearl Street at Main Street - Parkinson Building burns down


Notable incidents beyond New England

1935
- Helena MT - City was hit by a barrage of several hundred earthquakes during the month, five quakes equaling or exceeding 5.5 on the Richter Scale, causing over $4,000,000 in damage. Most buildings were damaged, and many collapsed, including Helena High School - Classes, when school resumed, were held in 21 railroad coaches - The roof of the armory collapsed during one of the quakes - The rear of city hall collapse displacing both police and fire headquarters - 343 aftershocks were recorded over a 10 day period, the strongest being 6.25 on the Richter Scale on Oct 18 - 80 per cent of the 3,500 homes in the city suffered from the quakes - The value of the average home is about $5,000 and the average damage to each is more than $100

1998 - Kansas City - MO - Flash flooding kills 11 people - In spite of the torrential rain, the Kansas City Chiefs football game goes on

The exhibit entitled FIRE IN THE LENS is in the WHMC gallery on the second floor of the Thomas Jefferson Library on the campus of the University of Missouri St. Louis. Mr. Dubowski is a Fireman and his work reflects his profession. The photographs will be on exhibit from through Monday October 31.
