*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

UNITED KINGDOM
LONDON, ENGLAND

THURSDAY 6 OCTOBER

Bermondsey – Maisonette blaze

Four fire engines and around twenty firefighters were called to a fire in a disused maisonette on Coopers Road, Bermondsey, this morning. The maisonette on the eleventh and twelfth floor of the tower block was totally destroyed in the blaze. Fire crews used two jets and breathing apparatus stopped the fire from spreading to the surrounding flats. The Brigade was called at 0308 and the fire was under control by 0404. Firefighters from Old Kent Road and Peckham attended the incident.

Westminster – office fire
Four fire engines and around twenty firefighters attended an office fire on Storeys Gate in Westminster last night. The blaze started in an office on the second floor and is believed to have been caused by discarded cigarette ash in a waste paper bin. Two people had left the building before fire crews arrived. The Brigade was called at 1856 and the fire was under control by 1949. Firefighters from Westminster and Lambeth fire stations attended the incident.

Stepney - seven rescued from flat fire
A man was rescued from a flat fire on Ensign Street in Stepney last night. Two neighbours noticed the smoke and dragged the occupier out into the communal lobby before the Brigade arrived. Firefighters rescued the man from the lobby and led six people to safety via the internal staircase. London Ambulance Service crews took the man to hospital suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. The fire completely gutted the kitchen and the rest of the ground floor flat was severely damaged by smoke. The Brigade was called at 2015 and the incident was under control by 2048. Fire crews from Whitechapel, Dowgate and Shadwell fire stations attended the scene. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

LOS ANGELES, CA:
MAJOR EMERGENCY STRUCTURE FIRE

On Thursday, October 6, 2005 at 10:50 P.M. (PDT) fifteen companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, three Rescue Ambulances, one Hazardous Materials Squad, four Battalion Chief Officer Command teams, one Division Officer Command team, assisted by two fire companies and one Battalion Chief Officer from Los Angeles County Fire Department and one fire company and one Chief Officer from Culver City Fire Department, all under the command of Assistant Chief Donald Austin, responded to a reported structure fire at the intersection of Marina Pointe Dr. and Lincoln Blvd. First companies reported a 150 x 200 single story commercial with one-quarter fully involved in fire. Firefighters began an aggressive interior attack as fellow firefighters proceeded to the roof to begin ventilation operations. As the lightweight roof construction began to exhibit signs of failure, firefighters vacated the building and began defensive operations with heavy stream appliances. The roof structure subsequently suffered catastrophic failure. One Firefighter suffered burns to his left arm, was treated on scene and transported to Sherman Oaks Burn Center. One Firefighter was treated for heat related problems and was transported to Daniel Freeman Hospital. Both firefighters injuries were initially reported as minor. Damage is still being tabulated. The cause is under investigation.
