Hammersmith – three people rescued

Three people were rescued from a fire in a public house on Goldhawk Road, Hammersmith in the early hours of this morning. A woman was rescued from the second floor balcony via a ladder and two men were led to safety from the first floor by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus. All three were suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation and taken away by London Ambulance Service crews Four fire engines and around twenty firefighters tackled the blaze which damaged part of a room above the public house. The Brigade was called at 0227. Fire crews from Hammersmith, North Kensington and Kensington fire stations attended. The fire is still under investigation.

Peckham – cylinder fire
Four fire engines and around twenty fire crews were called to a fire in a range of single storey garages in Love Walk in Peckham this morning. Six propane cylinders were confirmed to be involved and a 100 metre exclusion zone was put in place as a precautionary measure because some cylinders can explode when heated. The Brigade and the local council evacuated between around 30 houses. Firefighters using two jets and breathing apparatus tackled the blaze which damaged part of the single storey garages. The Brigade was called at 0640. Firefighters from Peckham fire station attended.

Goodmayes – roof fires
Six fire engines and around thirty firefighters were called to a blaze which affected several houses in Broadhurst Avenue this afternoon. The fire destroyed the roofs of two houses and a small part of a third roof.
The Brigade was called at 1203 and was under control by 1428. Fire crews from Ilford, Dagenham, Barking and East Ham fire stations attended. The fire is still under investigation.

1852
- Lowell - MA - Unusual Death - Mills of the Merrimack Company - Night watchman was fatally injured while oiling a shaft that revolved at 118 rounds per minute - His clothes had become entangled at the top of the shaft whereupon he was carried upon it - His head and arms were bashed at each revolution of the shaft into a wall and the hanger for the shaft - His boots were ripped from his feet and thrown some 20 feet away and his clothes were in tatters - The hanger was covered with his blood and hair - He was found barely alive by the overseer of the mill who noted that the gates to the mill had not been open for the morning shift - In his last breath he uttered the words "Help me"

1905 - Colebrook - NH - T.G. Rowan Hotel fire $18,000 loss

2000 - Lyndeborough - NH - 3rd Alarm FATAL - 23 Glass Factory Rd - 2 Story Wood Frame Dwelling fire reported victims trapped - Call came in as a heater overturned with fire followed by several additional calls - 3 ambulances and all available EMT's requested to scene - Extra PD requested to scene - At least 1 victim with serious burns transported to Nashua, died at hospital

The exhibit entitled FIRE IN THE LENS is in the WHMC gallery on the second floor of the Thomas Jefferson Library on the campus of the University of Missouri St. Louis. Mr. Dubowski is a Fireman and his work reflects his profession. The photographs will be on exhibit from through Monday October 31.
