any type 1 diabetic firefighters?

I was 12 years old when i was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I am now 14, just about to be 15. at the age of 16 I can become a fire cadet here with the department. I just want to know what it's like being a firefighter with type 1 diabetes. we have a type 1 diabetic firefighter with the department here, but we never talk. any response would be apreciated. thanx

buddy every fire department is different and every one who have dibetes are different. i know a few who have it and it allows them to do it, i dont know about you, and it may put you out of a highly competitive job in the future. the best thing for you to do in your department is to talk to who ever it is who has you same condition and see how it is for him. every department and insurence company will look at this situation differntly.

my diabetes is in good condition. the thing about the department here is it is volunteer. the only time i see and talk to him is when there is a fundraiser or right after a call. every once in a while, i talk with the chief here and to the diabetic. he said as long as it is in good condition i should be fine. but this is in iowa. i just moved here from fort worth texas where i wanted to become a firefighter. there are different laws in each state, but federal law says i can't be discriminated against because of my condition. i understand what your saying. thanx
