Default a senator, grant programs & misinformation

did anyone read the news story about a certain former First Lady/current US senator and how she was going to investiaget why Deot of Homeland Security was buying firetrucks for Kansas, Vermont and other places instaead of funding important work at places that need security funding?
talk about misinformation - someone on her staff needs to do their homework about the grant programs and how they fit under the DHLS umbrella - or they need to get to thier PR firm and straighten them out.
some people will say anything to get a vote!!!!!!!! she is no friend of the fire service if she believes this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not for nothing, but have you perused these forums and seen how many Firefighters confuse the grants also? How sad is that.

Opening your mouth and inserting your foot occassionally happens to us all and is a prerequisite for political office IMO but, that is what they pay big bucks to speech writers and have PR firms for prior to 15 second "sound bites" causing foot in mouth disease.

These Senators and Congressional Represenatives are supposed to employ a grants liason person on their staff that should have been consulted prior to that exclamation from her, and in a state where FF is such a time honored tradition and so prevalent, I would not have wanted to be heard saying that and risk an IAFF censorship or vote of no confidence.

Like all politicians she needs to learn what side her bread is buttered on!

(Oh, did I just say that! Shut my mouth!) LOL!

Not exactly. When DHS was created it encompassed alot of functions not just terrorist threats. The main goal was to be prepared for "catastrophic" events. This does not limit the function of DHS to terrorist threats.

Securing Our Homeland--The DHS Strategic Plan

    Straight from www.dhs.gov:

The National Strategy for Homeland Security and the Homeland Security Act of 2002 served to mobilize and organize our nation to secure the homeland from terrorist attacks. This exceedingly complex mission requires a focused effort from our entire society if we are to be successful. To this end, one primary reason for the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security was to provide the unifying core for the vast national network of organizations and institutions involved in efforts to secure our nation. In order to better do this and to provide guidance to the 180,000 DHS men and women who work every day on this important task, the Department developed its own high-level strategic plan. The vision and mission statements, strategic goals and objectives provide the framework guiding the actions that make up the daily operations of the department.

Just who is this Mahoney from Manhatten and just where does she get her statistical data from? See below quoted directly form the news article link above:

"Renewing her call for fair funding, Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens) wielded 2004 statistics showing Montana received a total $7.3 million for its fire departments, or $7.84 per person.

Meanwhile, New York got a paltry $935,110 - 12 cents per person - from the Homeland Security FIRE Act grant program."

According to my statistical data, New York got $35,370,084 in 04 AFG money compared to Montana at $7,290,158. Personally, I do not see an "equity balance" problem in the slightest. Anyone who is Iknowledgebale knows that State of NY is consistently on the top of the list in total AFG monies every year.

I see a politician looking for votes and sufferring from "foot in mouth" disease. First rule of politics lady, get your facts straight before going for the thirty second sound bite lest it bite you back in the "you know where"!

I noticed she did not compare NYC to Butte or Missoula, thank God!

There isn't much to do but laugh at the pompus statements of people so out of touch with reality. Leave it to a liberal to lead the charge crying "Wolf!"
