Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service Honors 13

Press Release Date: Wednesday, October 05, 2005

In Frankfort, hundreds gathered to honor the lives and sacrifices of the state’s firefighters who gave their lives in the line of duty over the past year. The annual service was held at Juniper Hills Park, site of a memorial listing the names of Kentucky’s deceased firefighters. Thirteen names were added to the memorial this year.

“I salute the brave men and women who have lost their lives in service to their community and I commend all of our state’s firefighters for the work you continue to do, day in and day out,” said Gov. Ernie Fletcher. “The sacrifice of these courageous first responders will never be forgotten. I am confident that their example of compassion and selflessness will encourage many others to rise to the challenge of service for many years to come.”

Of the names added to the Memorial this year, eight firefighters lost their lives in the line of duty over the past year. Two were Kentucky firefighters that lost their lives after being activated for military service and three were Kentucky Division of Forestry firefighters that lost their lives in 1965.
