*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

UNITED KINGDOM
LONDON, ENGLAND

WEDNESDAY 19 OCTOBER

Lewisham – house fire

Four fire engines and around twenty firefighters attended a house fire on Francemary Road, Lewisham in the early hours of this morning. The blaze damaged part of the first floor and is thought to have started in one of the bedrooms. Four adults and a child escaped before the Brigade arrived. A woman was taken to hospital by London Ambulance crews suffering from smoke inhalation. When fire crews arrived a smoke alarm was sounding, Lewisham Watch Manager Bill Sollis said, “This incident highlights how important a working smoke alarm is as the fire caused thick black smoke throughout the house. I believe had there not been a smoke alarm we would have been rescuing the five people instead of them escaping before we arrived.” The London Fire Brigade carries out home fire safety checks and will fit a free smoke alarm where needed. To make an appointment or for more information call freephone 0800 0 24 48 24. The Brigade was called at 0112 and the fire was under control by 0141. Firefighters from Forest Hill, Lewisham and Greenwich fire stations attended the incident.
