    Default Railroad carriers

Just curious if anyone knows of a place were I can obtain information relating to rail cars that carry hazardous materials. I would like to learn more about the various types of cars on our railroads.

Start with your local railroad. Most are more than willing to assist local responders with training issues.

The Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) shows the common types of railcars that transport hazmat.

    Post Rail Carriers

One good place for information is http://www.boepublications.com/. It is the web site for the Bureau of Explosives. Don't let the name throw you, it evolved from when nitroglycerin had to be transported over road and rail.
Also try http://www.aar.org/. The web site for the Association of American Railroads. An industry association.
The Federal government site is http://www.fra.dot.gov/. The Federal Railroad Administration.
Mtnfireguy is quite right. The local rail carrier where I live has been very helpful to our county haz mat team. They have given us tours of their yard and allowed us to do some drills on a tank car. That was certainly a learning experience. It is quite a chore to climb on top of a tank car even in a level A training suit. It was very useful in helping us with some pre-planning should we have to do it for real.
    Hope this helps you WRFDTO.
