UNITED KINGDOM
LONDON, ENGLAND

MONDAY 24 OCTOBER

Kilburn – smoke alarm alerts neighbours

Firefighters were called to a small fire at a flat on Messina Avenue in Kilburn early on Sunday morning. Neighbours living in flats above the ground floor property were woken by the sound of a smoke alarm and called the Brigade. Fire crews arrived at the scene and had to force entry into the property where they found two men asleep. Both men had started to breath in smoke, but were woken by the firefighters and led to safety. The fire is thought to have been caused by a chip pan which had been left turned on and unattended. West Hampstead Crew Manager Eddie Gavin said: “If the property had not been fitted with a smoke alarm this could have been a much more serious incident for both the occupiers and the people living in the flats above. We managed to stop the fire spreading from the kitchen, but the entire flat had filled with smoke.” The Brigade was called at 0204 and the fire was under control by 0212. Crews from West Hampstead fire station attended the incident.
