*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

PA. Fire Instructor Line Of Duty Death (The Secret list)

FirefighterCloseCalls.com: It is with deep regret that we advise you of the tragic line of duty death of Pennsylvania Adjunct Fire Instructor / Altoona Fire Captain Robert Gallardy, age 47. Gallardy was severely burned on Sunday while conducting an instructor training program at the State Fire Academy in Lewistown. He was working as an adjunct instructor for the state at the time of the injury. Fire instructor trainees found him unconscious in the basement of the academy's training facility shortly after he lit a fire the students were going in to extinguish. Sadly, Instructor/Captain Gallardy passed away this morning with his family by his side.

Gallardy, who has been a member of the Altoona Fire Department for more than nine years, and has more than 30 years experience as a firefighter, was promoted to the position of captain in July. In an interview yesterday, Altoona Chief Santone referred to Gallardy as a "super firefighter who was one of the best in the business."

PA. State Fire Commissioner Ed Mann has contacted the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health to be the lead on investigating the incident and they are expected to arrive in Lewistown today.

We will send memorial information on The Secret list as well as post them on www.FirefighterCloseCalls.com as soon as they are available.

Take Care-BE CAREFUL,
BillyG

Battersea – maisonette fire

Five fire engines and around twenty five firefighters tackled a blaze in a maisonette on Weekley Square in Battersea last night. The fire caused severe damage to the five roomed maisonette and there was heavy smoke logging throughout. Seven people were alerted to the fire by a smoke alarm and managed to get out of the property via a back door before fire crews arrived. The Brigade was called at 2207 and the fire was under control by 2232. Firefighters from Battersea, Wandsworth and Clapham fire stations attended the scene. The cause of the fire is still not known and is being investigated by fire investigators and the police.

LOS ANGELES, CA:
REPORTED SMOKE/FATALITY:

On Tuesday, October 25, 2005, at 2004 hours (8:04 P.M. PDT), five Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, one Battalion Chief Officer Command Team, one LAFD Rescue Ambulance, and four Arson Investigation Teams, under the direction of Battalion Commander Richard Markota, responded to a Reported Smoke at 7516 North Forbes Avenue in the Lake Balboa/Reseda area. First units on the scene reported a one story, bungalow style dwelling with smoke showing. Forcing entry through a rear door of the occupancy, Firefighters entered the structure with handlines to aggressively attack the fire and were immediately confronted with “pack rat” like conditions. Weaving their way along the pathways that led throughout the structure with handlines and simultaneously conducting an initial search and rescue operation, Firefighters eventually located the fire adjacent to a wall heater. The fire was extinguished in approximately twelve minutes. During the secondary search and rescue of the structure, an adult male was found in the kitchen area covered in a considerable amount of debris with only his face exposed. The victim was quickly removed from the structure in full arrest. Firefighters and Paramedics immediately began administering advance life support to the victim on the scene and during transport to Northridge Hospital. The eighty-year old male was subsequently pronounced dead at the hospital. No other injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is listed as “combustibles too close to a heat source”. Fire damage is estimated at $5,000, structure only.
