*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***
Camden NJ Firefighters save Church and Homes
Oct 25,2005 South Jersey was bracing its self for the tail end of Hurricane Wilma. The Jersey shore area was getting hammered with 40 and 50 MPH winds just, 50 miles east in the City of Camden NJ they were getting ready for a busy day, rain was falling but luckily the heavy winds had not hit the City. Shortly after 11:30 a.m. the tones went out for a dwelling fire on the 3400 block of Merrill Avenue in the East Camden section of the City. Battalion Chief 2 (Anthony Phelps) was the first on location and reported that he had a three story frame duplex with fire showing on the first, second and third floors and reported that he would be using All Hands and a few minutes later he requested a 2nd Alarm. Even before fire fighters were able to stretch in their first line the entire structure lit off. Some thirty feet away on the right was a large two and a half story church and to the left was another two story frame duplex. Water lines were quickly placed on the exposures enabling the fire fighters to stop the spread as more Master Lines were being laid to attack the main blaze.
Luckily the high storm winds had not reached the City as of yet enabling Camden fire fighters to contain the blaze to the original fire building.
Car 3 (Deputy Chief Price) placed the fire Under Control in about an hour. The fire at this time is being investigated by the Camden City Fire Marshal's Office.
Quiet Mischief Night in Camden NJ "Well Allmost"
October 30, 2005 Mischief Night in the City of Camden NJ was a quiet night except for one working fire. From 6 pm to 12 midnight there were 13 routine calls. Most of them were for Alarm Systems, 3 Rubbish fires and 1 major fire that started in a vacant three story brick row and extended to one exposure. This night was not like years ago when the City was faced with over 130 Working fires. The last few years there was no action at all.
Camden Fire Department responds to over a dozen or more All Hands fires plus a few multiple alarm fires each month. This Mischief Night fire occurred before 8 pm in the 200 block of Morse Street in the East Camden section of the City. The first due Engine Co. 9 was out on an CO Alarm System along with Ladder 3 and Battalion 2 when the call came in. Making Squad Co. 7 the first due Company. Deputy Chief Tom Quinn, Car 2-B, Chief of Operations was on the Street and was first in and reported that he had a large brick vacant row of dwellings with heavy fire showing in all floors and he requested an additional Truck Co. to be added to the Box. Battalion 2 ( Lewison) and Engine Co 9 and Ladder Co. 3 had just cleared from their previous assignment and were responding. All Hands Fire were not announced on the Fire Radio bringing an extra Engine Company and Battalion 1 (Harper).
The fire had now extended into the 2nd dwelling and Car 2-B (Quinn) requested the 2nd Alarm, bringing two additional Engine Companies and a Truck Company along with Deputy Chief Car 3 (Murphy). A defensive mode was setup using an exterior attack, using Tower Ladders 1 and 3. Ladder 2 and Rescue 1 made primary searches of the exposure buildings while additional 1 3/4 inch lines were brought in to the exposure buildings for an interior attack. These dwellings were two story in the front and three story in the back. Fire fighters were able to contain the main fire to one dwelling and were able to stop the fire from spreading to the other buildings.
The fire was placed Under Control in about an hour by Deputy Chief Quinn and the fire fighters remained on the scene over hauling. The blaze is under investigation by the Camden City Fire Marshal's Office and no other incidents occurred the rest of the night in the City.

LOS ANGELES, CA:
On Monday, October 31, 2005 at 6:16 PM PST, fourteen Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, three LAFD Rescue Ambulances, one LAFD Hazardous Materials Squad, one EMS Battalion Captain and four
Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, as well as various LAFD investigative and support resources, all under the direction of Assistant Chief Roderick Garcia responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at
13456 West Van Nuys Boulevard in Pacoima. The first Company arrived quickly to discover fire through the roof of a 75' x 100' one story commercial structure. Firefighters using handlines mounted a bold and
decisive attack against the flames, which had extended from the rear of adjoining businesses into their common attic of the stucco clad wood-frame building. The fire was skilfully confined to the rear storage
area and attic of Edwin's Carpets, a flooring sales and service firm and Billars el Gallo, a billiard hall. Firefighters brought the flames under control in just twenty-two minutes. There were no injuries. Loss from the fire is still being tabulated. The cause of the blaze remains under active investigation.
