Four fire engines and around twenty firefighters were called to a blaze at a house on Lakenheath in Southgate yesterday afternoon. The fire started in a back bedroom. Most of the first floor was damaged and there was heavy smoke logging throughout the property. A man left the building before fire crews arrived and was taken to hospital by London Ambulance crews suffering from smoke inhalation. Firefighters could not find a smoke alarm in the property. The London Fire Brigade carries out home fire safety checks and will fit a free smoke alarm where needed. To make an appointment or for more information call freephone 0800 0 24 48 24. The Brigade was called at 1439 and the fire was under control by 1543. Fire crews from Southgate, Barnet and Edmonton fire stations attended. The cause of the fire is still unknown and is under investigation.

Walworth – flat fire
Four fire engines and around twenty firefighters were called to a flat fire on Elba Place in Walworth yesterday afternoon. The fire started in the kitchen and has severely damaged the flat on the third floor. Twelve residents were evacuated by fire crews wearing breathing apparatus. There was no smoke alarm in the property. Working smoke alarms give an early warning of fire and help give time which can save lives and prevent injury. The London Fire Brigade carries out home fire safety checks and will fit a free smoke alarm where needed. To make an appointment or for more information call freephone 0800 0 24 48 24. The Brigade was called at 1712. Firefighters from Southwark, Old Kent Road and Lambeth attended the scene. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

LOS ANGELES, CA:
Multi-Patient Traffic Collision #0556

On Wednesday, November 2, 2005 at 2:05 PM PST
, eight Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, ten LAFD Rescue Ambulances, three EMS Battalion Captains and one Battalion Chief Officer Command Team under the direction of Assistant Chief Roderick Garcia responded to a Multi-Patient Traffic Collision near 6020 Woodman Avenue in the Van Nuys/Valley Glen area.

Firefighters arrived quickly to discover a two-vehicle collision involving a MetroLiner bus. According to witnesses, the eastbound sixty-foot 24-ton articulated bus, operating on the recently opened Metro Orange Line busway, was struck broadside by a southbound gray compact sedan.

The driver and sole occupant of the sedan, a 78 year-old Woodland Hills woman, was transported in fair condition to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills by LAFD ambulance. In light of the
damage to her vehicle, Firefighter/Paramedics treating the woman are confident that her seat-belt use combined with the deployment of her vehicle's airbag minimized her injuries.

From aboard the bus, fourteen persons, most complaining of neck and back discomfort, stated a desire for medical treatment and transportation. They were quickly triaged and treated as necessary for minor injuries before LAFD ambulance transport to regional hospitals.

This incident is being investigated by Los Angeles Police and Metro officials, as well as the County of Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, which provides contract policing for the 14-mile long busway that extends across the San Fernando Valley on a dedicated right of way from Warner Center to North Hollywood.

Respectfully Yours in Safety and Service,

Brian Humphrey
Firefighter/Specialist
Public Service Officer
Los Angeles Fire Department

Report on FF Fatality (The Secret list)

NIOSH has recently released a fire fighter fatality investigation report...and while they are all of great value, this one if of particular note. This is the event where one Firefighter was killed and another Firefighter was very seriously injured when two separate apparatus collided at an intersection while responding to a fire.

Some folks have commented that the NIOSH reports are often similar-but we disagree as to that "tone"...while they are definitely getting more detailed (than they were in the past) and significantly enhancing their reports to be as much value to all of us as possible, we also continue to do some of the same things...which creates a situation where some reports may seem like "same old".

These reports are of great value for training, planning and learning-so we don't have to go through the same thing at our own departments. But we need to use them locally - in the firehouses-so every firefighter riding in every position - and every fire officer running whatever sector or crew they run - understands what happened. So it doesn't happen to them. Us. Etc.

Additionally, keep in mind the life long nightmare impact that these line of duty deaths have on the firefighters family. Sure, their family member is now dead-but what is left can be family members who are living...but "dead" inside. Wanna see what that looks like? Attend the next National Fallen Firefighter Memorial Weekend, October 7 & 8, 2006.

Here is a brief synopsis of the latest report....on April 27, 2004 a 34-year-old firefighter died after the engine in which he was riding (Unit 1) crashed into an engine from another department (Unit 2) as they passed through an intersection. Both engines/departments were responding to the same call for a structure fire. The force of the impact caused the front of Unit 1 to collapse inward and cause crushing injuries to the unrestrained driver whose legs were pinned between the seat and the dashboard. He was extricated and transported to the hospital for treatment. The rear passenger of Unit 1 received minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released. The victim, who was riding unrestrained in the officer’s seat, was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Witnesses described the impact as a "massive explosion"... The report can be found at the following link: http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/face200443.html

Please go to the link, check it out and either print it or e-mail it to every member of your FD or company. The apply or develop policies that prevent it. Then discuss it. Then drill on it. Then don't let it happen....or ignore it and watch for another "same old" NIOSH report.

Have members who still don't get it on the seat belt issue? Go to our home page www.FirefighterCloseCalls.com and scroll down the page---just above the wheelchair picture. Watch the video.

Take Care,
