fire in a pair of vacant South Toledo houses yesterday caused significant property damage but no known injures.

The blaze started in an empty two-story house at 217 Leland Ave. about 3:30 p.m., and spread to a vacant one-story house at 223 Leland, fire officials said.

Total damage for the two structures was estimated at about $100,000. Firefighters remained on watch at the scene until late into the night.

The cause, which fire officials termed suspicious, remains under investigation.
