VA FIRE CHIEFS DIES / 2 IOWA FF's INJ @ EXPL. / MASS. FF SHOCKED
www.FirefighterCloseCalls.com

Authorities found the burned body of a Virginia fire chief Sunday morning after he operated by himself to fight a brush fire the day before. A search party found the body of 68-year-old Max Willard, chief of the Oakwood VFD, at around 8:30 a.m. on top of a hill in Buchanan county at a brush fire that started Saturday afternoon. The fire apparently started from a lawn mower that had suffered a mechanical failure. The fire spread to hundreds of acres using multi-alarm firefighters from all over the area. The fire was mostly extinguished by Sunday night. About an hour after the fire started, Willard went into the woods by himself with a fire rake, an investigator said. "He never came back out." Police and fire agencies from around the area formed search parties Sunday morning, setting out at about 7:30a.m. About an hour later, they found Chief Willard. His body had been burned by the fire. The body has been sent to Roanoke for an autopsy. Preliminary results could come as soon as Tuesday.

And in Iowa, two firefighters are recovering today after two explosions at a Pella (Iowa) company. The Pella fire chief says a dust explosion ignited a fire inside the American Wood Fibers plant early Sunday afternoon. As firefighters tried to put out the fire, another explosion took place. Two firefighters suffered hand injuries as concrete and metal flew through the air. One firefighter was treated and released from a hospital. The other had to be airlifted to a Des Moines hospital. His condition has not been released. This isn't the first time there's been trouble at American Wood Fibers. Back in December of 2002, an explosion and fire consumed the plant. Police believe wood dust caused that explosion.

And a Worcester, Mass firefighter suffered a severe electrical shock last night while pulling down a ceiling while fighting a fire in a second-floor apartment at a condo fire. According to WFD Officials, the unidentified firefighter was using a pike pole to check the extent of the fire when it came into contact with a live wire. The firefighters' injury did not appear to be life threatening.
