How do you like it compared to Verizon?

Actually, I have both. I have Verizon as a personal phone and carry a Nextel for my off duty business. Up here, Verizon has no equal in coverage. I can't say that for the Nextel, but Verizon cannot replace the features of the 2-way. It's kind of a hassle to carry 2 phones but the features of both are what I need.

    Talking I like it

Though Nextel isn't a department thing we use it a lot between members.
Also - try calling 123 from your Nextel phone - around here we do that and listen to a local radio station; 3WS

Sorry to hear that. Most Nextel users in my area are switching to other providers as the service is poor at best.

Myself, I use Verizon and have not had any problems.

I used to be a huge Nextel basher. But had to get one cause it makes the world easier when everyone else at the pd, fd and my ambie company have them. Now I cant leave home with out it. Service sometimes leaves something to be desired. But it has gotten better since Sprint and Nextel have been putting up new tower and combineing some. Still think Nextel is the empire of evil though.....LOL

Where I live, if you walk 10 feet to the left - no NEXTEL coverage. 10 more feet - coverage. 10 feet again - no coverage.

And with Sprint PCS calls, I get dropped quite often. Never had a problem with Verizon or Cingular (merged with AT&T). Both of these companies have great coverage.

I like NEXTEL's idea, just wish their network was up to par. Guess I will stick with my tin can and string.

NEXT HELL.......LOVE IT OR HATE IT!

I have 2 Nextel phones.......One personal one, and one for my job. (Don't ask, it's just logistically easier on everyone rather than try and separate the bills.....)

I can be in one place.....And have no service on one phone, but service on the other one........Can you say "WTF!!??"

I used to get great service in and around the Lehigh Valley, Pa area......then about 6 months ago, it was like someone threw a switch.....BAM! dropped cell calls, busies when xmitting 2-way, etc etc etc.......Seems though lately it may be getting a tad bit better around here, I understand they got a lot of complaints from locals. Other than that, I like them. Great for my job. And I have many friends all over the US that have them- It's nice to just hit the 2-way and "beep beep.......Hey so-and-so" in Podunk Florida, and hear them like they are standing next to you.

My NEXTEL expert (!) tells me that this is going on all over the country (at least where NEXTEL exists), and has to do with both the Sprint/NEXTEL merger, and the spectrum shift that was causing all the agony earlier this year.

In my town, NEXTEL is the only thing that works with any hint of reliablity, and we have been experiencing the same kind of troubles described above.

My Vollie FD often uses Nextels with our highband when checking some of our corprate park for AFA's - the off hour maintnence tech and our Chief officers all have nextels, and it makes life a little easier.

I do agree that the signal can leave much to be desired.

Although - I had Direct Connect access all the time when I was down in Lousinana for Katrina (Although I didn't get into New Orleans for the first week). Cell service was less than perfect, the network overloaded several times and phone service was non-existant.

Also... if you have a Nextel, get a Goverment plan... you get a discount, and you are also supposed to have "Priority" in the event of an emergency (You aren't dropped/booted off if the system is overloaded, someone else is).

The good thing about all these advances in communications equipment is that it allows everyone to get in contact with you when they really need you.
The bad thing about all these advances in communications equipment is that it allows everyone to get in contact with you when you really don't need it.
I got hooked on Tracfone because I don't make many calls and I don't get telemarketers at suppertime.

As for the Priority Connect, you have to actually sign up for that feature. It is normally done for Gov't agencies. Some exceptions can be made for individuals depending on the situation.

mixed emotions on my nextel... its great when it works, $ucks when it doesnt. too many "dead spots" in an urban area, imo. funniest part is, while on the 86th floor of the empire state building (highest point in nyc) it doesnt work.. maybe its interference from the 500 antennas up above, but odd nonetheless..
