AUSTRALIA
YURAYGIR NATIONAL PARK FIRE 4.00PM UPDATE

Firefighting crews from the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS), Forests NSW and National Parks and Wildlife Service will undertake extensive backburning operations overnight to secure the eastern edge of a fire burning in Yuraygir National Park, about five kms northwest of Corindi.

The fire which has burnt out around 2500 hectares of private property, forest and parkland is expected to continue progressing north towards Wooli Road for the next 48 hours, until the strong southerly winds abate.

Out of area crews will support local firefighters with extensive backburning operations overnight in an effort to contain the fire on the eastern flank. More than 70 firefighters, five helicopters and six heavy machines have been working under extreme fire conditions today to hold the fire on the western flank.

The communities of Wooli and Half Way Creek have been asked to prepare for the possible impact of fire in the next two days and are reminded to ensure that they have properly prepared their properties.

RFS community liaison officers will work in Wooli and Half Way Creek areas late tonight and early tomorrow to ensure that all property owners are aware of the fire's progress. Community liaison officers will also ensure that property owners are well prepared for the possible onset of fire.

Smoke and ash from the fire is affecting communities up to 15 kilometres in front of the fire. Residents that are concerned about the smoke and ash are asked take this opportunity to prepare their properties for the bushfire season.

Motorists are asked to avoid Barcoongere Way, Station Creek Road the Pacific Hwy from Corindi to Grafton due to smoke hazards and possible road closures. The Station Creek rest area is closed and is expected to remain closed for the next four days.

UPDATE: VA Fire Chief Death

Hey....The Virginia fire chief found dead after disappearing while battling a wildfire died from the burns that covered his body, the autopsy revealed. Oakwood Fire Chief Max Willard, 69, tragically died from "extensive burns," according to the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke. Chief Willard was one of about 70 firefighters fighting a wildfire Saturday. The Chief went off by himself armed with only a rake, friends and fellow firefighters said. When he did not return by dark, a search party was sent out. The body was found Sunday morning on a hillside charred by the fire.

Capt. Joe Ward of the Whitewood VFD, which helped fight the fire, speculated earlier that the blaze may have jumped a fire line Willard was raking and caught him from behind. The chief would have had to run up a very steep hill to escape the fire, he said. ‘It was real steep where he was at, so he couldn't outrun it,’ Ward said.

Chief Willard’s funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at the Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel in Keen Mountain, VA.. The service will be followed by his burial at Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery in Princeton, W.Va. Members of the Oakwood VFD will serve as pallbearers.

Take Care-BE CAREFUL. Firefighters...all of us...must work in teams-not alone. Two Firefighters have burned to death in the last 30 days...working alone.
