*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

AUSTRALIA
SALTWATER CREEK FIRE 10.00am UPDATE 18/11/05

Planned backburning operations by NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS), Forests NSW and National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) crews on a fire burning in Yuraygir National Park were delayed overnight due to light rain.

Over the last ten hours, about three millimetres of rain has fallen on the fire that continues to burn about five kms northwest of Corindi. Rainfall has made access to the fire difficult and has delayed firefighting operations for the next 24 hours.

Six heavy earthmoving machines continue to work on the northern and western flanks of the fire and firefighting crews from the Lower North Coast will black out the fires edge on the south western side of the fire today.

Crews from Forests NSW and NPWS continue to mop up in the eastern division and prepare fall back lines in the northern division.

Five helicopters remain on standby to assist firefighters with blacking out the edges of the fire and to monitor the northern part of the fire which remains uncontained.

RFS Commissioner Phil Koperberg will visit firefighting crews and the incident management team today at Coffs Harbour.

Fire crews successfully held the fire on all edges yesterday under erratic and unpredictable fire conditions. Southerly winds which have pushed the fire north through the National Park are expected to continue for the next 72 hours.

RFS community liaison officers will work in Wooli and Half Way Creek areas today to ensure that all property owners are aware of the fire's progress. Community liaison officers will also ensure that property owners are well prepared for the possible onset of fire.

Sightseers are asked to avoid Barcoongere Way and Station Creek Road which will remain closed to the public. The Station Creek rest area is closed and is expected to remain closed for the next four days.

UNITED KINGDOM
LONDON, ENGLAND

FRIDAY 18 NOVEMBER

Enfield – flat fire

Four fire engines and around twenty firefighters were called to a blaze at a flat on Ayley Croft in Enfield last night. The fire started in the bedroom and damaged part of the flat on the tenth floor. There was heavy smoke logging throughout the property and a communal corridor. People living in a flat on the floor below left the building before the Brigade arrived. The Brigade was called at 2020 and the fire was under control by 2051. Fire crews from Edmonton and Southgate fire stations attended the incident.

Euston – flat fire
Firefighters were called to a fire at a flat on Hampstead Road in Euston last night. The blaze started in the kitchen and is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault. Half of the second floor flat was damaged by the fire and there was heavy smoke logging throughout the property. Two people escaped the flat before the Brigade arrived. They were both taken to hospital by London Ambulance crews suffering from smoke inhalation. There was no working smoke alarm in the flat. The London Fire Brigade carries out home fire safety checks and will fit a free smoke alarm where needed. To make an appointment or for more information call freephone 0800 0 24 48 24.
