An ISO shipping container (8'x8'x 20', 40', 45', 53', etc) or a smaller equipment/packing box?
If ISO container start with a google for local resellers or contact some freight forwarders (there are dozens). Work thru them to find a likely donor line (like Evergreen, Maersk, Hyundai, etc). The big container lines all serve the NE and dump old equipment regularily to resellers/rebuilders. A donation certainly should be possible, obsolete ones don't go for that much money.
Port Authority NY/NJ may be able to help you. Click thru http://www.panynj.gov/
Seaport
Marine Terminals and Transportation
Ocean Carriers
for a listing of all the ship lines that operate in the area. You can easily figure out on line which are container lines. Start calling. tel # are listed.
