Pro 2051, runs about 150 dollars new.

Find yourself a good antenna for the frequency range you'll be needing, and you're all set.

I have a Radio Shack Scanner that has served me extremely well over the past 2-3 years. I would definatly recommend them.

    Hello,
Try going to wallmart and pick up a Uniden Bearcat BC350A
they are only like 99$ and and cover from 29 Mhz - 500 Mhz
as far as a antenna goes depending on what frequency you run on , you should get one cut to length, we are on 46 mhz and I use a dual band Amateur radio mag mount, it covers 144-500 mhz but on 46 mhz the length should be around 5 feet of antenna for a 1/2 wave .. but we have a 300 watt transmiter and it covers the county well.
I can recive dispatch from just about every where even outside our district.

The radioshack Pro 89 has worked very well for me and its a good scanner for this area it picks of the the high systems such as 800 Mhz to the low bands that CHP uses in the 40's

i ain't a cadet or old enough to have a car, but i use a cobra SR 900 in my bedroom. it's old as i am (15). but i hear from different people that they prefer cobra, that's the way i would go. i don't if they make car scanners or not.

I wanted one for the house for Christmas, I didn't get it... my mom kept saying "they are from the stone age". Well, now after reading this thread I am going to go pick one up myself I think.
