Question Australia & New Zealand Members

I initiated some Topics within this Forum to attract a response from Australians or New Zealanders, but the lack of responses indicate that there may not be any Australians or New Zealanders on this Forum?

    Hello New Zealand and welcome.

I guess there would be a fair few of them out fighting Bushfires, especially in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania.

    Hello Bendigo, welcome.

You live in a nice part of the world.

I spent a few days around Maldon and Castlemaine.

Nice country, especially when the Wattle was in bloom.

Default Welcome to our friends down under

Great to have representation from down under. It may be a great leap of faith but I suspect there may be the odd rugby fan among you. I played for more years than I care to remember and consider my rugby playing days as golden. I recently received some great news from one of my former team mates who's son was just named to the All-Black under 19 squad for the under 19 World Championships in Dubai. His selection will no doubt result in a New Zealand cheering section here in Canada.

    Talking Hola!

Good to see that there are some female fireys around. I had the good fortune of meeting the other 3 girls in my region on my Rec Trng Course and we currently have the only station in our zone with 2 girls. I will definately be checking back in here often.

    Welcome Australia to the Forums.

Although it is now winter Down Under, in the coming summer months may you have a safe and uneventful Bush Fire Season and may your footy team win.

Red face Retained - Permo Q's

    Hey guys/gals

Just wondering if there is anyone out there that has switched from Retained to permanent (NSWFB)? I have been retained for a couple of months now and love the job and am considering applying in the next intake for the permo's. Any advice etc?
I am already training to get my fitness up - am not to worried about the strength test as I have already completed them at Rec Trng but the beep test is a bit of a concern.

I have been told that I shouldn't divulge my intention to my station so I figured I'd ask around here.

    Thanx

Ozzy here, former US firefighter and now in Oz and working on going back to firefighting. There are those of us down under that are here, we just need to promote looking at this forum and website in Oz. When I was with the CFA in Victoria my past experience as a F/F in the US was shunned in my station, so I don't think it would go down well to tell everyone to look at this site, it might promote firefighters to be "too agressive" I think the term was used about myself. It is a good place to lean and see how things are being done around the world.

Welcome to the International Forum - Australia & New Zealand.

I am also located in Australia but every time I try to show my location in my profile, I get the message, 'You have entered an invalid birthday.'

Ozzy69FF, there appears to be an increasing number of Americans settling in Oz. Have you made the transition successfully or are you suffering from a culture shock?

It's unfortunate that your previous experience was "shunned" by the Country Fire Authority in Victoria but I have seen it happen before with British Firefighters/Police/Military who have settled in Australia and I think it has a lot to do with how you deliver the message to the Aussies.

They don't take kindly to, "And this is how we do it in America or back in the UK, this is how we do it."

That way you either get classed as a 'Bloody Whinging Pom' or an 'Big Time Over The Top Yank'

Hi all, been around a bit but only just found this forum..there you go. Irish, mate it seems to be an Australian institution to reinvent the wheel, you won't feel so bad when you know that most fire services won't even recognise training from other Australian ones, yet alone overseas. And don't try and bring an idea from another brigade until it is thoroughly pulled apart and reorganised to "better represent the service" (read changed for changes sake - or at least to stop the copyright lawyers).

Sorry, in pay negotiations at the moment, feeling a bit cynical
