UNITED KINGDOM
LONDON ENGLAND

FRIDAY 9 DECEMBER

Bow – flat blaze

Six fire engines and around thirty firefighters were called to a fire at a flat on Wellington Way in Bow this morning. The blaze started in the bedroom and severely damaged a flat on the seventeenth floor. Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus quickly stopped the fire from spreading to surrounding properties. Five people left the flat before the Brigade arrived and one woman was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews suffering from smoke inhalation. Early investigations suggest the fire started accidentally. Bow Watch Manager Clive Hayward said, “There was no working smoke alarm in the flat, had it not been for the sound of glass smashing which woke the residents living in the property, this could have been a much more serious incident. Smoke alarms are inexpensive, easy to install and could save you, the people you live with and your home.” The London Fire Brigade carries out home fire safety checks and will fit a free smoke alarm where needed. To make an appointment or for more information call freephone 0800 0 24 48 24. The Brigade was called at 0522 and the fire was under control by 0647. Firefighters from Bow and surrounding fire stations attended the scene. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
