I would guess a couple thousand.

Pennies when you consider the total cost...

    Default Do What?

You're kidding right. You mean to tell me that the dept has so much money and every bit of equipment that they could possibly need that the only thing left to spend there money on was spinners for their firetruck. Someone should be drug out into the street and beat with a 2 1/2" hose.

I wonder if the department has recieved any grant money? (for anything!!!!) If they have it's a shame because there are a lot of departments that don't have much and could put a couple of g's to good use.

First of all I am not defending the department for having spinners on this rig.

Having said that...maybe Pierce threw them in to get the bid. I was amazed at the stuff included with our new pumper in order to get the sale.

Im wondering if they were custom made. Pierce said it was the First fire truck to have rear wheel spinners. I dont think i have ever seen spinners for heavy truck rims.
I wonder who on the apparatus committe suggested this?

Let's face it: Shiny, flashy trucks are here to stay. FD's with big budgets are more than willing to spend money on this stuff and the manufacturers will happily do it for them.

Spending a little more money on things like AM/FM/CD and fancy wheels might just be worth it to a volunteer department that needs all it can to recruit members from a young age.

Im going to use strong language- but thats how much this makes my stomach turn- WHAT A BUNCH OF F*CKTARDS!

Even if Pierce DID give them the wheels, they should have had the foresight, responsibility and maturity to say "Well thats a nice offer, but I think we would rather have 4 sets of turnout gear......" or "Thats a nice offer, but we think the money would be better served if you installed a GPS/Mapping system in the truck"......or "How about a foam system instead?"

I wont even go into what should happen to them if they had the balls to spec these wheels......

No matter how they got there, how do you justify something like that to a taxpayer?

Is there anybody with that dept here or the sales rep or anyone that can give us the real reason they put spinners on this otherwise useful machine.

I saw a bobtail Kenworth pass me this summer on 128 near boston with spinners on all axels, so they are out there. These were obviously custom machined aluminum rims on one very pimped out low rider truck.

"Real Wheels" are wheel simulators, those stupid chrome inserts you put in your steel wheels to make them look like mags when you're too cheap to get the real thing. They may have only cost hundreds rather than thousands.

Real Wheels had these on display last year at FDIC. In our conversations with them (no we didnt want them, but told our chief we were going to spec them on the next engine as a joke), their reps indicated the real market for these things were the big towtruck/salvage folks. They'll do anything to one-up each other, and I think it was where the guy had said they had sold the most of them.

If they are on all four wheels it, at most cost probably about $950, probably even less. Even though you may not like them, it's very unique, and many people who come to open houses are going to think they are pretty cool. Kids and adults alike, and if that rig spends any time in the ghetto, you'll get respect from those who dwell within.

Do I get points for trying?

I think it's unique and cool, yet serving no purpose, just like how many useless gadgets the fire service has these days.

The department could justify it by saying it costs less money over the life of the truck to maintain them over a polished aluminum surface...

    Hey, just a though.
