GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE

On Tuesday, December 13, 2005 at 2:06 AM (PST), ten Companies of Los Angeles City Firefighters, three Rescue Ambulances, one Arson Unit, one EMS Battalion Captain, two Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, and one Division Chief Officer Command Team, under the direction of Battalion Commander John Drake responded to a Structure Fire at 2479 W. Pico Blvd in Pico Heights/Koreatown. When Firefighters arrived they found lazy smoke in the area and began investigating to locate the source. As Firefighters made access to the two story structure, a bar on the first floor with an apartment located above, they began an initial search of the structure. A significant amount of smoke was found on the second floor. Firefighters discovered that a flash fire had occurred in the second floor hallway causing significant damage to the hallway. The fire was extinguished in twenty-seven minutes. There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Incident #0111
975 N. Vendome St.
Echo Park/Silverlake

On Tuesday, December 13, 2005 at 3:15 AM (PST), ten Companies of Los Angeles City Firefighters, six Rescue Ambulances, one Arson Unit, one EMS Battalion Captain, three Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, and one Division Chief Officer Command Team all under the direction of Assistant Chief Richard Warford responded to a Structure Fire at 975 N. Vendome St in Echo Park/Silverlake. When units arrived on scene, they immediately reported heavy smoke and fire showing from at least one basement unit of a two story apartment over commercial building. Firefighters attempting to access the fire were immediately confronted with a "Major Evacuation Problem" as frightened residents were exiting the building. While Firefighters attempted to gain access to, and control of the fire, additional firefighters conducted search and rescue operations on the first and second floors. Firefighters located two residents on the second floor and evacuated them to safety. Both occupants were evaluated by paramedics with one being treated and transported to for smoke inhalation. In addition, 3 LAPD Officers were evaluated and transported to Queen of Angels/Hollywood Pres. Hospital for treatment of minor smoke inhalation. The fire was controlled in just 35 minutes. The Fire Department is currently in the process of rehousing the building occupants. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. The dollar loss is still being tabulated.

Incident #0150
17817 Magnolia Bl
Encino

On Tuesday, December 13, 2005 at 5:02 AM (PST), thirteen Companies of Los Angeles City Firefighters, two Rescue Ambulances, one Arson Unit, one EMS Battalion Captain, two Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, and one Division Chief Officer Command Team all under the direction of Assistant Chief Tony Varela responded to a Structure Fire at 17817 W. Magnolia Bl. in Encino. Firefighters reported a 100' x 150', two story, garden style, apartment building with fire in the attic. As firefighters were attempting to gain access to the attic fire, fellow firefighters conducted salvage operations below the fire, to protect the residents personal property from water damage. Simultaneously, firefighters on the roof coordinated ventilation operations with the fire attack teams. Even though the fire was well established in the attic portion of the building, firefighters were able to gain control in just 43 minutes. There were no reported injuries. The cause is under investigation. The dollar loss is still being tabulated.

Alabama FF Critical/Chicago FF's Inj/NJ Update

A Hillsboro, Alabama firefighter was critically injured while operating at a working mobile home fire last night. Firefighter Brian Reed, 27, was listed in critical condition and awaiting transport to UA at Birmingham Hospital. Reed suffered smoke inhalation during the fire around 2000 hours, which destroyed the trailer. About 40 minutes into it, EMS was called for FF Reed. EMS reported Reed's respiratory health worsening, his airway increasingly restricted, as the ambulance approached the hospital. By 2200, the fire was under control was under control.

Additionally, in Chicago yesterday, 3 firefighters remained hospitalized for carbon monoxide inhalation last night after a basement fire at a thrift store. 10 firefighters were originally brought to area hospitals for related respiratory symptoms after the fire, which started around 2130 hours on Sunday in a basement light fixture. Fire officials initially suspected the firefighters had inhaled fumes from an ammonia-based chemical. By Monday evening, only 3 remained in Illinois Masonic Hospital, all in good condition, CFD officials said.

And in some POSITIVE NEWS, 4 Burlington County, New Jersey firefighters were only slightly injured yesterday when their apparatus (returning to quarters) swerved to avoid an oncoming bus and slid into a ditch. The apparatus was an open cab older model Mack with open jump seats-pictures are on our homepage (scroll down to the News/Updates area) courtesy of PhillyFireNews.com. The apparatus, returning to Union Fire Company, Station 251 in Medford about 1530 hours, pulled over to make way for the bus on a narrow road. The soft shoulder collapsed, and the truck slipped into the gully, landed on its side, and trapped the 4 according to Medford police. The firefighters were treated at hospitals for a variety of non-life threatening injuries and the reports are that all firefighters were belted in.

APSN was founded by true emergency professionals that are more than just scanner listeners. We specialize in notifying you about major fire and police events as they happen around the entire State of Arizona. Our professional staff knows what news is, and we do not send minor, non newsworthy events. All television, talk radio & newspapers in Phoenix currently use APSN. When you receive an alert from APSN, you will want to know what is happening! Why wait for the evening news when you can have the news, as it happens, delivered directly to your pager or email address! How do we notify you? That is your option. Although alpha numeric pagers have proven to be the fastest form of notification, we can notify any email address that you may have. That means we can send alerts to your PDA, 2-Way pager, cell phone, or personal email.

For paging groups around the country, we use the FNNM national system for multiple alarm or newsworthy incidents. We prefer to receive incidents via SNPP but can receive via dial up modem.
