*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

UNITED KINGDOM
LONDON, ENGLAND

FRIDAY 16 DECEMBER

Lower Clapton – house fire

Firefighters were called to a blaze at a house on Mildenhall Road in Lower Clapton yesterday morning. The fire started in a basement bedroom and is believed to have been caused by the careless disposal of a cigarette which set a chair alight. Half of the basement was damaged by the blaze and there was heavy smoke throughout the building. A man was rescued from the first floor via a builder’s ladder before the Brigade arrived. Fire investigator John Edgar said, “There was no working smoke alarm in the flat, had it not been for the man coughing in his sleep which woke him up, this could have been a much more serious incident. Smoke alarms are inexpensive, easy to install and could save you, the people you live with and your home. This incident highlights the importance of checking that your smoke alarm has a working fitted battery inside it.” The Brigade was called at 1104 and the fire was under control by 1141. Fire crews from Homerton fire station attended the scene.

9 y/o ALA. FF Killed, SC App. Crash & PA. FF Burned

FirefighterCloseCalls.com: We regret to advise you that Alabama Firefighter Chelsea Lyn Garvin, 19, died yesterday from injuries received in a collision Saturday on Fish River while she was riding on a rescue boat following a Christmas boat parade. Garvin, a 2005 Fairhope High graduate, was one of three South Baldwin Search and Rescue team members on the boat when it collided with another vessel at about 2000 hours. She was flown to the University of South Alabama Medical Center by LifeFlight. She died at 1459 hours yesterday, said fellow Marlow/Fish River Firefighter Brady McLaughlin. McLaughlin said Garvin had been a volunteer with the department for about a year. Capt. Bob Woodward of the Fish River-Marlow VFD and a member of the search and rescue team, said the crash happened around 9 p.m. when the crew was heading back to the boat launch following the annual Christmas parade on the river. The rescue team was about three-quarters of a mile north of the bridge when the their 15-foot jet boat collided with a 20-foot boat that was not involved with the parade. We'll post additional on FirefighterCloseCalls.com News/Updates if we get more.

And the Belmont Fire Department located in Greenville County, South Carolina was involved in an apparatus vs. semi truck and trailer yesterday. They were riding in a 1990 custom cab Sutphen but it is unknown if they were restrained or not. Three Belmont firefighter’s were entrapped and all 4 were listed as critical in the hospital as of yesterday afternoon.

And finally, fast-moving house fire in Philadelphia last night killed a man - the city's 52nd fire death this year - injured his elderly mother, and severely burned a firefighter. The fire began in the second-story rear bedroom of the home about 7:10 p.m. and was under control at 7:22. Philly's Fire Commissioner Ayres noted that the home did not have working smoke detectors. Firefighters found running water in the bathtub and the presence of pails as indicators that the man tried to put out the fire rather than to get out. The firefighter, whose name was not available, is being treated at Temple University Hospital for what Ayres called "significant burns."

Take Care-SLOW DOWN-Be Careful.
