    LOS ANGELES, CA:

    12-22-2005 1714 Hours
    LAFD Incident #0820
    Greater Alarm Structure Fire
    16542 Ventura Boulevard
    Encino, CA 91436 USA

On Thursday, December 22, 2005 at 5:14 PM (PST), seventeen Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, 5 LAFD Rescue Ambulances, 2 Arson Units, 1 Urban Search and Rescue Unit, 1 Hazardous Materials Squad, 1 EMS Battalion Captain, 4 Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams and 1 Division Chief Officer Command Team, all under the direction of Battalion Chief Joseph Foley responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 16542 Ventura Boulevard in Encino.

Firefighters arrived quickly and despite initially discovering no signs of active fire at the five story sealed office building, immediately initiated LAFD's High Rise Operations Plan. The building's Fire Control Room was identified while the lobby and elevators were promptly secured.

As Firefighters swiftly aided more than a dozen occupants in safely exiting the 40,295 square-foot multi-tenant building, they received reports of moderate smoke on north end of the uppermost floor.

Given this information, additional LAFD resources were requested as teams of Firefighters climbed stairs with the hundreds of pounds of equipment necessary to battle a potential high-rise fire.

Clearing each floor of the building as they ascended the stairs, Firefighters established a logistics and support base on the a 4th floor as well as a rooftop ventilation group as they investigated pervasive smoke within the office and attic above a 5th floor orthodontic suite.

Aided by strategic opening of the composition roof over plywood sheathing by Firefighters using chainsaws, the considerable smoke and heat from the fire was quickly vented vertically with the aid of positive pressure fans as Firefighters fully extinguished a stubborn fire among the wooden rafters and recently applied roofing materials in just 37 minutes.

Quick and skillful teamwork by 117 members of the LAFD kept this fire above the attic and out of multitude of offices, several of which were undergoing renovation.

Firefighters were quick to credit building occupants for their prompt yet calm evacuation upon hearing the fire alarm, and for their swift activation of the 9-1-1 system.

There were no civilian or Firefighter injuries.

Loss from the fire is estimated at $30,000 ($20,000 structure & $10,000 contents). The cause of this early evening blaze is attributed to a roofing operation earlier in the day.

Ohio FF Struck, MD, NY & Fla (incredible) Close Calls

We have several Firefighter CLOSE CALLS to report...with an extremely unusual
one in Florida as our final one.

==This evening, a Forest Park (Ohio) firefighter was struck and seriously injured while operating at the scene of a previous auto crash. Initial reports are that the firefighter suffered fractures to both legs but was alert upon arrival at the local trauma center and is expected to survive his injuries. This one hit close to home involving some friends of ours...we heard the urgent radio traffic....we wish all the best to all the officers and members of the FPFD and especially the firefighter (and his family) affected for a very quick recovery.

==In Saulsbury, Maryland yesterday, Lt Richard Rathel, Christopher O'Barsky, and Zachary Bridges of the Saulsbury FD were all burned at a hopper fire. Rathel suffered burns on his head and chest, O'Barsky suffered burns to his neck and shoulders, and Bridges to his head, chest and hand. The SFD responded to a fire alarm and found a fire that originated in a waste hopper that was packed with sawdust. The firefighters were injured when flames shot out of the building as they were gaining access to it. A fireball could be seen shooting from the structure at about 9:30 a.m., briefly engulfing a firefighter who was on an
elevated platform. (The picture and related details are on the News/Updates area on the home page of www.FirefighterCloseCalls.com)

==In Charlotte, North Carolina, investigators are searching for answers in a late night house fire that injured two firefighters. The blaze happened at about 11:15 p.m. Wednesday and two firefighters were hurt when the attic floor of the home collapsed. They are expected to recover. Investigators are still trying to determine what started the fire. Damage is estimated at $200,000.

==In New York City Firefighter Matthew Long of Ladder 43 was critically injured this morning after being struck by a bus at 52nd Street and 3rd Avenue in Manhattan while traveling to work by bicycle at approximately 5:50 AM. Firefighter Long, a 12 - year veteran of the FDNY suffered multiple fractures and serious internal injuries. He is listed in critical condition at this time...it should be noted that NYC transit was on strike at the time.

.......And lastly....in East Naples, Florida, a 39-year-old homeless lunatic was arrested early Wednesday morning after investigators say he TOSSED A PROPANE TANK THRU THE WINDOW OF A FIREHOUSE AND SHOUTED THAT IT WAS A BOMB. Three firefighters were hurt, two when they jumped from the second story of the station when they heard the psycho yelling that he'd thrown a bomb.

    Reports provided these details:

Several firefighters and a paramedic were on duty and asleep in the fire station. Paramedic Wayne Burke was resting downstairs in a recliner in the break room when Cuff (the homeless guy) threw a full propane tank through a glass door about a foot from where Burke was. The shattered glass covered Burke's body. Cuff then went into the station and screamed that there was a bomb. Burke yelled for help from his co-workers. Two firefighters, David Perez and Andrew Sanchez, heard Cuff yelling that there was a bomb. Because their only escape route was being blocked by Cuff, both firefighters jumped from the second-story window to the ground. The firefighters then ran to a nearby condominium development and flagged down a vehicle so they could use the driver's cellular phone to call for help. Burke said Cuff kept walking toward him, telling them it was a bomb. Burke then pulled a folding pocket knife, which he carries on duty. Burke opened the blade and Cuff ran out through the same door he'd broken. A deputy arriving at
the scene saw Cuff run from the station and chased him and tackled him. Cuff fought with the deputy, rolling around and kicking at the officer. Cuff, who is 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 205 pounds, kicked the deputy and used his knees to try to break away. After the deputy ordered Cuff to stay on the ground or the deputy was going to use his Taser stun gun to shock him, Cuff tried to stand up. The deputy fired his Taser twice, but the darts didn't stop him. Cuff kicked the deputy several more times and then the deputy used the Taser again, this time putting it on drive stun and holding it to Cuff's shoulder and neck. And once
again, the Taser had no effect on Cuff, the deputy said. More deputies arrived to help and it took 4 cops to subdue Cuff. Cuff faces the following charges: false report of planting a bomb or explosive, discharge of a destructive device, burglary, battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer with violence. Burke was treated for scrapes to his face and Sanchez and Perez had foot and ankle injuries.

Or...maybe they just toss HIM from the 2nd story of a building with a full propane tank tied around his....wait-never mind. Tis the season. With any luck and intentions by all of us-we won't have to send another Secret List out between now and Sunday. So, with that hopefully said, we wish everyone a very Merry Christmas as well as a great Hanukah and Kwanzaa.

    Take Care-BE CAREFUL.
