Former Ohio State University football star Maurice Clarett turned himself in tonight to police who were seeking him on charges of aggravated robbery.
Clarett, 22, appeared at the Franklin County jail with his attorney about 9 p.m. to answer a felony arrest warrant.
He was being booked about 15 minutes after his former OSU teammates finished beating Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, Ariz. That bowl game had been the scene of Clarett's biggest football triumph as the running back on the 2002 OSU team that won a national championship.
He is likely to appear in Municipal Court today.
The armed-robbery charges against Clarett, 22, have thrown his family for a loop, relatives said.
"It's devastating for" Clarett's mother, said Vince Marrow, the former running back's cousin and a confidant during Clarett's days at OSU.
"We all hope it's not true and we want to clear his name, if it isn't true," Marrow said today. Marrow was in Arizona for the Fiesta Bowl game.
Clarett was charged with two counts of aggravated robbery after Lucas Nyarko and his friend, Tywona Douglas, reported that they were accosted by a gunman early Sunday in an alley behind the Opium Lounge, a nightclub at 346 S. High St..
The gunman, whom police quickly identified as Clarett, escaped after stealing a cell phone from Nyarko, 28, of Columbus.
Clarett's agent, Josh Luchs, of Los Angeles, said he hadn't talked with Clarett.
"We hope this is all a misunderstanding," Luchs said. "Allegations are just that, allegations. We will wait and see."
