Inmates die in jail fire
Local News - Monday, January 09, 2006 @ 07:00
Two male inmates are dead after a blaze ripped through the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service (NAPS) detachment in Kashechewan Sunday afternoon.
NAPS Insp. Pierre Guerard confirmed reports of the fire, saying two officers and a civilian guard were also injured.
One of the officers suffered severe burns in a rescue attempt and was airlifted to Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital.
“There’s two other (officers) there, but they weren’t involved in the incident,” said Guerard. “They’re staying behind to help us out.”
The others are currently being treated for smoke inhalation.
Guerard said trauma units and relief officers have been sent to Kashechewan, although he was unsure of the exact number of extra staff.
NAPS has not yet released the names of the deceased inmates or the injured officers, pending notification of next of kin.
Guerard said the NAPS Northeastern headquarters in Cochrane has been receiving many reports as police try to piece together exactly what happened.
“A lot of calls have been coming in; we’re trying to filter them out,” he said.
The fire started at approximately 2 p.m. Sunday before consuming the entire structure.
Officers made every attempt to evacuate the building, but were eventually overcome by the smoke and flames.
The inspector said Kashechewan residents were considerably shocked by the news.
“Everyone’s taking it pretty hard,” said Guerard. “The officers are shaken up, but they are manning their post.”
The Ontario Fire Marshall is investigating with assistance from the NAPS crime unit and the OPP.
