Default Mexico demands US allow illegal immigration

You can't even make this up

Mexico Demands U.S. Allow More Immigration
    Jan 10 2:09 AM US/Eastern
    By MARK STEVENSON
    Associated Press Writer

    MEXICO CITY

Diplomats from Mexico and Central America on Monday demanded guest worker programs and the legalization of undocumented migrants in the United States, while criticizing a U.S. proposal for tougher border enforcement.

Meeting in Mexico's capital, the regional officials pledged to do more to fight migrant trafficking, but indirectly condemned a U.S. bill that would make illegal entry a felony and extend border walls.

"Migrants, regardless of their migratory status, should not be treated like criminals," they said.

The countries represented at the meeting _ including Mexico, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Belize and Panama _ created a working group to design a regional policy to avoid migrant abuse and to follow the course of the legislation.

"There has to be an integrated reform that includes a temporary worker program, but also the regularization of those people who are already living in receptor countries," Mexican Foreign Relations Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez said.

Derbez has called the measure _ which passed the U.S. House of Representatives last month but still must go before the Senate _ "stupid and underhanded," but was somewhat more restrained on Monday, saying "it's not the Mexican government's position to tell the U.S. Senate what to do."

The U.S. proposal has caused widespread resentment in Mexico, where some have accused President Vicente Fox's administration of not being assertive enough in opposing it. Fox has called the bill shameful.

Mexicans working in the United States are a huge source of revenue for Mexico, sending home more than $16 billion in remittances in 2004, Mexico's second largest source of foreign currency after oil exports according to the country's central bank.

Fox's spokesman, Ruben Aguilar, defended the administration's record on Monday, telling reporters that migration has declined in recent years, though official figures show it remains at historically high levels.

Aguilar also said migrants "don't emigrate because they lack work, but rather for a series of other reasons, cultural reasons or better living conditions."

And this would be why they want to open the border even more.

If illeagal immigration were made a felony wouldn't our courts be jammed and jails packed with immigrants? May be a stupid question I guess... but ?

Welcome to the United Socialist republic of America. I know we meddled in a lot of other countries affairs over the years. Why do the doors only swing into this country though for every body else in the world. Maybe we should just annex the whole of Central America into the US and oust their leaders and absorb the people and the land with whatever resources they may have. The so-called minority (Hispanic) now comprise 30 to 35% of the population. Add all the other minority groupings and who actually comes out being a minority. If you want to be a citizen of this country I could care less as long as you say I AM AN AMERICAN instead of having decals and flags of where you came from all over your cars and stuff. I may have just set off a fire storm but it is only an opinion and everbody has one.

Good thing you caught the point of this thread.

America has been built by immigrants. Chances are, your ancestors were immigrants. Of course, the vast majority of these immigrants came into the US LEGALLY. There is nothing wrong with celebrating your heritage. You apparently have a problem with people displaying their Portugeuse, Brazilian, Chilean, Puerto Rican, etc. heritage. Do you have the same people with people celebrating their Polish, Irish, Italian, Norwegian, etc. heritage?

Double standard? Yes. The point of this thread? Not even close.

You probably won't set off a firestorm. Most of the peoplpe on here will just ignore ignorant people.

So you'd be opposed to my scotland flag sticker on my fire helmet then?
My family has been here for 150 years but I'm still proud of my scottish heritage. Why shouldn't I be?

    Default point?

Maybe I did miss the point but I am not sure it was more than a text without your own comments. Do I have a problem with people celebrating their heritage, absoulelty not. My grandparents came from Germany the legal way here. However, you don't see me attending the local German/American Club. What for; I am an American plain and simple(well maybe not simple for some). I wave only one flag, pledge allegiance to one country and served in the Armed Forces of one country. Your heritage is yours and rightfully so but if you live here I don't want to see viva Mexico stickers or I love India or whatever else. If you want to live here then this your home and your country and if you don't like it then go back where you came from. Of course you can make a good life here and send your money to support family wherever but what does that do for our economy? Anyway, sorry if I upset the applecart and missed the point.

With all due respect, I'm just curious as to what made it "legal" for the Germans to come here?

Have you ever heard of the term "stacking"?

Have you read anywhere about the drain on ED resources that undocumented aliens are posing? That would, by extrapolation, mean that they are probably taxing EMS rsources as well.

Since this is "Off Duty", do you enjoy people illegally entering the country with impunity?

And before anyone asks... Yes, I vehemently disagree with the Administration's policies in this area.

    I agree.
And I don't care what your heritage is, you can still be proud of it and say so. cause this is America. It's amazing to me how much racism still exists in this country, especially against people of mexican decent.

George: now you want to call me a racist? I have no problem with any race of immigrant as long as they entered legally and applied for citizenship. In reality the only people that belong here legally are the Native Americans, Indians or whatever label is PC. I am beginning to think we have all been sucked into this thing as a way to stir the perverbial melting pot. Come to think of it there is a race of people here that were brought here against their will to work for the white immigrants. Keep your Scotland flag sticker if it makes you happy Firetacoma1; it's yours. I don't go around telling people they can't but it doesn't stop me from not liking it; it is just that I don't feel the need to get into it with you verbally or physically over the sticker. Hey george; is it a free country or not? We are all different ain't it wonderfull?

Illegal immigration is a drain on our nation's resources. I have no problem with you coming into this country, do it through the proper avenues - legally.

If these countries would spend half the time concentrating on resolving issues in their own countries as they do on telling us what to do, they'd probably solve the issues that make people want to leave.

And why do people who are against illegal immigration always called racist? Just a question. If I don't want illegal immigrants coming into the United States it doesn't matter where they are coming from, I am against it.

And they should be treated like a criminal - they are. You get caught coming across the Rio Grande you are guilty. Fine, try them (we have immigration courts for this) and they are found guilty - kick them back across the border.

George has a point, illegal immigration is a drain on many resources - go to an ED in Arizona, New Mexico, California - Heck, why not come to Durham, NC where people are TRUCKED to get driver's licenses from Massachusetts and New Jersey because it is easier for illegal immigrants to get a license - even though they are criminals (albeit uncovicted.)

Excuse me if I don't like paying for it. If my wife or I get hit in a MVC by a car driven by an illegal immigrant we lose everything because odds are they are not insured because they do not want to get a license, register a car, or whatever and want to stay below the radar BECAUSE THEY KNOW THEY ARE CRIMINALLY HERE and don't want to be deported. Yet I am racist because I am against it. I don't care if you came here illegally from China, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Germany, Russia, or Iraq - you are here illegally and therefore you are a criminal.

I pay for their healthcare on top of the $3,600 a year I have to pay for our health insurance. Sorry, I just don't care for it.

Oh yes, there is nothing wrong with your heritage or celebrating it - I don't care where it comes from.

Um, they came across on a boat, went into New York Harbor, stopped off at Ellis Island, were processed ACCORDING TO THE LAW and when all was said and done they were residents (most soon to become citizens) of the United States of America.

And many were returned to their native lands for a variety of reasons.

Sadly, that is not PC to many people nowadays.

Spoken 90 years ago, and just as true now.

    Theodore Roosevelt Advocates Americanism, 1915

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
... There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all. This is just as true of the man who puts "native" before the hyphen as of the man who puts German or Irish or English or French before the hyphen. Americanism is a matter of the spirit and of the soul. Our allegiance must be purely to the United States. We must unsparingly condemn any man who holds any other allegiance. But if he is heartily and singly loyal to this Republic, then no matter where he was born, he is just as good an American as any one else.

The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic. The men who do not become Americans and nothing else are hyphenated Americans; and there ought to be no room for them in this country. The man who calls himself an American citizen and who yet shows by his actions that he is primarily the citizen of a foreign land, plays a thoroughly mischievous part in the life of our body politic. He has no place here; and the sooner he returns to the land to which he feels his real heart-allegiance, the better it will be for every good American. There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

For an American citizen to vote as a German-American, an Irish-American, or an English-American, is to be a traitor to American institutions; and those hyphenated Americans who terrorize American politicians by threats of the foreign vote are engaged in treason to the American Republic.

    Americanization

The foreign-born population of this country must be an Americanized population - no other kind can fight the battles of America either in war or peace. It must talk the language of its native-born fellow-citizens, it must possess American citizenship and American ideals. It must stand firm by its oath of allegiance in word and deed and must show that in very fact it has renounced allegiance to every prince, potentate, or foreign government. It must be maintained on an American standard of living so as to prevent labor disturbances in important plants and at critical times. None of these objects can be secured as long as we have immigrant colonies, ghettos, and immigrant sections, and above all they cannot be assured so long as we consider the immigrant only as an industrial asset. The immigrant must not be allowed to drift or to be put at the mercy of the exploiter. Our object is to not to imitate one of the older racial types, but to maintain a new American type and then to secure loyalty to this type. We cannot secure such loyalty unless we make this a country where men shall feel that they have justice and also where they shall feel that they are required to perform the duties imposed upon them. The policy of "Let alone" which we have hitherto pursued is thoroughly vicious from two stand-points. By this policy we have permitted the immigrants, and too often the native-born laborers as well, to suffer injustice. Moreover, by this policy we have failed to impress upon the immigrant and upon the native-born as well that they are expected to do justice as well as to receive justice, that they are expected to be heartily and actively and single-mindedly loyal to the flag no less than to benefit by living under it.

We cannot afford to continue to use hundreds of thousands of immigrants merely as industrial assets while they remain social outcasts and menaces any more than fifty years ago we could afford to keep the black man merely as an industrial asset and not as a human being. We cannot afford to build a big industrial plant and herd men and women about it without care for their welfare. We cannot afford to permit squalid overcrowding or the kind of living system which makes impossible the decencies and necessities of life. We cannot afford the low wage rates and the merely seasonal industries which mean the sacrifice of both individual and family life and morals to the industrial machinery. We cannot afford to leave American mines, munitions plants, and general resources in the hands of alien workmen, alien to America and even likely to be made hostile to America by machinations such as have recently been provided in the case of the two foreign embassies in Washington. We cannot afford to run the risk of having in time of war men working on our railways or working in our munition plants who would in the name of duty to their own foreign countries bring destruction to us. Recent events have shown us that incitements to sabotage and strikes are in the view of at least two of the great foreign powers of Europe within their definition of neutral practices. What would be done to us in the name of war if these things are done to us in the name of neutrality?

    One America

All of us, no matter from what land our parents came, no matter in what way we may severally worship our Creator, must stand shoulder to shoulder in a united America for the elimination of race and religious prejudice. We must stand for a reign of equal justice to both big and small. We must insist on the maintenance of the American standard of living. We must stand for an adequate national control which shall secure a better training of our young men in time of peace, both for the work of peace and for the work of war. We must direct every national resource, material and spiritual, to the task not of shirking difficulties, but of training our people to overcome difficulties. Our aim must be, not to make life easy and soft, not to soften soul and body, but to fit us in virile fashion to do a great work for all mankind. This great work can only be done by a mighty democracy, with these qualities of soul, guided by those qualities of mind, which will both make it refuse to do injustice to any other nation, and also enable it to hold its own against aggression by any other nation. In our relations with the outside world, we must abhor wrongdoing, and disdain to commit it, and we must no less disdain the baseness of spirit which lamely submits to wrongdoing. Finally and most important of all, we must strive for the establishment within our own borders of that stern and lofty standard of personal and public neutrality which shall guarantee to each man his rights, and which shall insist in return upon the full performance by each man of his duties both to his neighbor and to the great nation whose flag must symbolize in the future as it has symbolized in the past the highest hopes of all mankind.

From Philip Davis (ed.), Immigration and Americanization (Boston: Ginn and Company, 1920)

DaSharkie, that's exactly how I feel about it too, you just posted it first. Laws are laws, plain and simple, people that suport illegal immigration support breaking the law.

And I'm sure EVERY German, Irish, Italian, Polish, Scottish, etc. abided by that law.

With every law there's a loop whole...hence "illegals" come here give birth to a child on U.S. soil and ZEE-AH-DEE-DO-DA you have another U.S. citizen.

Or how about this one...an "ILLEGAL" gets married to a U.S. citizen....well golly oh gosh.....there goes another of of them damn MEXICAN illegals...oh wait...that's right the white man's laws aren't all that fair. While he appears to be "ILLEGAL" in your eyes....he may just very damn well be legal.

To the guy who's b*tching about uninsured drivers hitting them and being sh*t up a creek. They offer this little thing called comprehensive coverage for insurance just incase ANY uninsured driver hits you.

Shall we discect the NAFTA agreement next. If we want to discuss "ILLEGAL" crimes, lets at least discuss something a little more of value like rapists, drug dealers, or dead beat parents. I think those types of people are a little more "taxing" on our society.

First let me say that I am from a Hispanic decent, however, having lived all my life here in Tucson I know the strains the increased flux of immigrants have taken not only on Arizona, but on you as a tax paying American as well.

From the public schools system - Children who are not US citizens and live accross the border are driven to public schools on the US side of the border by the parents. This is something that burdens the public schools and fills the classes up and beyond capacity. Some even catch the schools bus on the US side to come to school. Not to mention all the dollars spent on the school lunch program that go to these illegal aliens[SIZE=3].

EMS System - I cant tell you how many times there has been MCI's involving a truck load of Illegals that require multiple agencies to respond to provide ambulance, fire, and Air ambulance response. These small towns do not have 20 or 30 units to spare - at most maybe 3 or 4 and that many not include any ambulances. The county system here has been drained numerous times leaving no or very little coverage for the county folks who pay for that coverage.

Once these patients are at the ER and spend a few days and are stable - the hospitals pay for private ambulances to take the patients back to Mexico to continue thier treatment at a hospital in Mexico - providing they accept the patient. Sometimes they are just simply transported to the border to go back home.

On the economic side - Granted there are a lot of mexican immigrants here working hard and paying thier share of taxes etc...there are still those over here driving new SUV's and Sports cars but yet pay for thier groceries with Food Stamps and are on pubilc assitance for rent, utilities, and health care.

On top of all of this people in the State of Arizona balk at English being the Official language - You cant call any business or Goverment agency it seems without listening to the spanish version of the menu first.

Crime - yes illegals are rapists, drug dealers, dead beat parents, thiefs, and running illegals in to the state.

Nah. You pretty much labeled yourself a racist. Go back and read your posts.

Shawn, the illegal immigrant problem goes beyond the hispanic community. It is critical in the Chinese community, as well as the Sri Lankan community. The problem is also huge among those with student visas-regardless of their descent.

I truly believe that the vast majority of AMericans have zero problem with immigration. That is LEGAL immigration. As I said before, this country is built on immigrants. But ot have these two-bit Latin American countries with about a tenth of our GDP trying to tell us what to do is the height of arrogance.

George I agree with you 100%. We dont see the the other immigation problems with other nationals here I suppose like other states.

From any country the Immigation needs to legal. Its funny how everyone(ok,maybe not everyone)hates America but wants to live here.
