MAJOR EMERGENCY BRUSH FIRE IN THE COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES:


On Sunday, January 8,2006, at 1400 hours (2:00 p.m. PST), sixteen companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, one Assistant Chief Officer Command Team, four Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, one Arson Unit, one Battalion EMS Captain, two LAFD Helicopters, and other LAFD support personnel operating under a Unified Command with Los Angeles County Fire Department as the lead agency, responded to a Brush Fire in the County of Los Angeles near the intersection of Sayre Street and Shablow Avenue. First LAFD units on the scene reported approximately one half to one acre of brush burning in very rugged terrain with little or no winds. Firefighters using handlines and aided by helicopter water drops confined the fire to approximately one acre of moderate to heavy brush and extinguished the fire in forty-eight minutes. No homes were threatened and no injuries were reported. The Los Angeles County Fire Department will determined the cause of the fire.

Croydon house blaze

Fire crews were called to a blaze which caused substantial damage to the first floor of a house on Towpath Way in Croydon in the early hours of Sunday morning. A man and a woman managed to get out of the house before the brigade arrived and both were taken to hospital suffering from severe burns. The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Brigade and Police. The Brigade was called at 0451 and the fire was under control by 0553. Crews from Woodside and Croydon fire stations attended the incident.

1962 - Tamworth - NH - Rte 16 - Trailways Bus drifted into oncoming car killing 3 in auto and injuring 6 on bus - 24 hour extrication to remove victims from car - Bus driver charged

1996 - Hooksett - NH - 7th Alarm, 1500 Hooksett Road (Rte 3) - Coastal Specialty Forest Products

1999 - Somerville - MA - 2nd Alarm - Box 151 - 97 Pennsylvania Ave - Fire in cellar and Floor 1

- Schenectady - NY - State Street - Ellis Hotel destroyed by fire

1912 - New York (Manhattan) - NY - Equitable Life Insurance Society Building, 120 Broadway: the early morning fire started in the basement and spread through the elevator shaft to other areas of the multistory building; subfreezing temperatures and water transformed the scene into gigantic ice sculptures; 6 people died, including a chief fire officer; the building burned for more than 36 hours and was a total loss.
