    Default Fatal Russian building fire

A fire has forced at least three women to jump to their deaths, it has been reported.

The blaze in Russia killed a total of nine people and injured 15 others.

Officials said staircases in the building were blocked by gates, hampering rescue efforts.

Some of the victims, who were mostly young women, leapt from upper floors of the nine-storey building.

Six people died at the scene while three others succumbed to their injuries in hospital, said Yulia Kozitskaya, an Emergency Situations Ministry spokeswoman.

A witness describing three jumping women said: "They waited until the very last moment."

A criminal investigation has been looking into suspected fire safety violations.

"There was no means of rescuing people - no ropes, no emergency exits," said onlooker Alexander Babykin.

The blaze, in the Russian Pacific coast city of Vladivostok, started at about 2am GMT.

Last month, President Vladimir Putin said fire-safety bodies must do a better job.

Those are some god-awful, horrifying images - even with as little as I know about firefighting, that black smoke looks REALLY bad!

Imagine having to get 20 or so guys together to move cars out of the way before even beginning rescue and suppression activities

    Gated stairways?

May those who lost their lives rest in peace

Saw that on the news this morning..but they didn't really have any details about it. When they just jumped off the building I was mortified.
