Trenton 6-6 1/8/06 1301 New York Ave "Baked Furniture"
At 19:53 hrs Trenton (Mercer) Fire Dispatch transmitted a box for 1301 New York Ave for a reported fire in the Lambert Furniture Warehouse. Eng 6 arrived 4 minutes later and gave the report "you better give me the box" ah belay that "transmit the 2nd alarm" . Units from the Slackwood Fire Co (Lawrenceville) saw the fire and took in the box. The initial report was I have a 1 story block long warehouse fully involved" Deputy Chief Snyder asked for a 3rd alarm and additional special calls throughout the night. A rather unusual request was to recall all Battalion Chief's. At which time I decided to go (9pm), a hour into this fire and the building was still fully involved. Numerous handlines, masterstreams, ladderpipes, towerladders, and a snorkel were in operation. I have been to a many of fires in my day and this reminded me of the Gilbraltar Clock fire in Jersey City back on November 18, 1972 some 23 years ago( A large fire in a block long building with fire at all angles). Many buffs and firefighters from NJ and PA responded into the scene and like myself were amazed at the heavy volume of fire throughout this warehouse. Deputy Chief Snyder started moving units from the exposure A side as there was a collapse in the corner which followed by a collapse on the exposure B corner as well. While responding to the fire, I spotted units from East and West Windsor going to the fire. Unlike the big towns where a Cheif request additional units for Mutual Aid, the Mercer Co Fire dispatch and Trenton Fire Dispatch coordinated thier efforts and units throughtout Mercer Co were dispatched to the scene. This by far was the biggest fire (in volume and size up) I have seen since the recycling warehouse in Hamilton back in Febuary of last year. But this is the biggest fire in Trenton since the Psychiatric Hospital fire in 2003. I still get baffled with the size of the Trenton Fire Department and the fact that it is the Capital of the State of New Jersey but depends on the the Volunteer Mercer Co units for assistance at fires of this magnitude. The following is the run down of the Mutual Aid Co's operating at the scene:
Lawrenceville (Slackwood, Lawrence Rd, Lawrence Square Villiage), Ewing (Pennington Rd and West Trenton), Hamilton ( Colonial, DeCou, and Groveville), West Windsor (Princeton Jct and West Windsor), Hopewell (Union-Titusville), Princeton Borough (Princeton Hook and Ladder), Princeton Township (Engine Co 3), East Windsor (East Windsor Co's # 1 & 2) , Morrisville, Pa (Morrisville Co # 1) and Falls Township, Pa (Falls Co's # 1)
As a side note, units from the state fire marshal's office are investigating this fire as arson as Centex Homes Inc. has entered into a agreement to buy this land from the current owner C & S associates to build 72 townhouses. As a matter of fact Centex Homes Inc., went in front of the planning board of Trenton last week (if my memory serves me correctly) and proposed the plans for the townhomes.

Chief Frank Brannigan R.I.P.
It is with the deepest regret and sadness that I inform you that Chief Frank Brannigan passed away this morning. I just spoke with his family and it is confirmed. A mentor and friend to me-and all of you, without a doubt, he has probably saved more firefighters lives than anyone. In his 60 year career, which began as a Navy Firefighting Officer in WWII, Frank has "been there, done that"...and he loved to tell us all about it! Since the 60's, he has concentrated his life on firefighter safety at building fires. Frank has received so many honors for his efforts to save firefighters lives. His 667 page book BUILDING CONSTRUCTION FOR THE FIRE SERVICE is our "firefighters bible" in, as Frank said so many times, "Knowing the Enemy of Firefighters"...buildings. Frank is also one of the 3 founding members of the FDNY Fire Bell Club of New York. More details when we have them. Please take a moment to remember one of our true great firefighters: Chief Frank Brannigan....who always had time to take care of us all, and who thru all of his
work, will continue to, forever.

Helping Our Own
"firefighter helping firefighter"
There are literally thousands of fire departments, nationwide, that are struggling to keep their doors open on a shoestring budget. Many don't have personal protective clothing, breathing apparatus, or even helmets to protect these courageous firefighters. Some are fighting structure fires in blue jeans and sweatshirts, and some of the poorer departments don't even have fire engines, they have to fight structure fires with a brush truck. That is unacceptable when larger departments are destroying good usable equipment, on a daily basis, which could be donated to these needy departments.
