Is it really the way to go for somebody looking to get into firefighting? I'm currently just an EMT and was thinking either military or fire academy. Thanks

A good guy to ask that to would be Ladder 8. He's in the Seattle area as a FF and is also army reserve.
I don't do FF with the army, but like the line says, "There ain't no life like it" - anywhere. Somedays thats not a bad thing. LOLIf you don't do it RIGHT today, when will you have time to do it over? (Hall of Fame basketball player/coach John Wooden)

The Army has a Military Occupational Specialty for Firefighting. It used to be 51M, now I think it has been changed to 21M. Here is a web page for info: http://www.wood.army.mil/warrior/51M/mos51m.htm
The Air Force also has a MOS (or SSI, or whatever the AF calls it).
There is an AF Reserve outfit here in WA, and an Army NG unit too.
Give your local recruiter a call. They have more info.
No matter which path you chose to follow, be dilligent and stick to it. Always be ready to learn.
Good Luck!
(ps: which Fire Academy?)Be safe y'all!

There are also vo-tech schools out there such as one that is out of Tacoma. Look in the phone book for those.Be safe y'all!

Join the military ONLY if you want to serve your country, if you do it for the training, the GI Bill money, or to have it on your resume, you will be miserable and make all around you miserable too.
