Fatal App. Crash in Del, App. Struck in Ohio, NIOSH rpt
An 84-year-old man was killed, and 6 firefighters suffered minor injuries after the engine company they were in crashed into a car near Lincoln at about 1630hours today, police. Delaware State Police spokesman Cpl. Jeff Oldham said the 84-year-old man was driving his Chrysler Pacifica north on Del. 38. and had the right of way. Witnesses said the Ellendale Volunteer Fire Company Engine 75 was traveling east on Del. 224, approaching a stop sign at the intersection between Ellendale and Lincoln and did not make a stop. The fire engine, carrying six volunteer firefighters, was responding to an automatic alarm at a residence on East Holly Drive. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Three Ohio fire trucks were put out of commission after they were hit by a dump truck on Tuesday morning. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, around 9:50 a.m. firefighters from the Union and Rush townships fire departments were fighting a blaze at a house on Arion Road near Henley Deemer Road when a dump truck loaded with 5,400 pounds of sand collided with their parked emergency vehicles. The dump truck was headed south when it collided with a Rush Township engine truck that struck the Union Township Volunteer Fire Department truck in front of it, then hit a Rush Township engine truck in front of it. Robert Graff, a firefighter who was sitting in one of the fire trucks, were both taken to Southern Ohio Medical Center where they were treated and released on Tuesday.
And lastly, NIOSH has released a new fire fighter fatality report "Career Fire Captain Dies When Trapped by Partial Roof Collapse in a Vacant House Fire - Texas (F2005-09)" that can be found at the following link: http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/face200509.html

MI. Firefighter Struck-Killed-LODD
An Ann Arbor firefighter died this morning in a hospital, six days after she was struck and critically injured on icy I-94 last Saturday. Firefighter Amy Pennywitt, who married in October and was previously known as Amy Schnearle, died at the U.M. Medical Center with her family by her side around 0830 hours this morning. Assistant Fire Chief Chris Brenner confirmed Pennywitt's death and said no funeral arrangements had been made. Pennywitt had just started her shift at the department at 7 a.m. Saturday when firefighters were called to a series of crashes on eastbound I-94. The firefighters parked their truck and were walking to vehicles involved in the crashes when a pickup truck spun out of control, officials said. The pickup truck hit the median wall, struck a parked car and then hit Pennywitt from behind. She was rushed to the U-M Medical Center with critical injuries that included closed head injuries, a punctured lung and broken ribs. Additional memorial details will be forwarded on The Secret List and FirefighterCloseCalls.com when we have them. As always-our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to the members of the Ann Arbor Fire Department and especially the family of Firefighter Amy Pennywitt.
Take Care-BE CAREFUL ON THE ROADWAYS...block, divert or whatever it takes so firefighters are protected...no matter what. See www.ResponderSafety.com for related information to prevent these kinds of roadway tragedies.
