hints on way to go. from somone who went through same thing
Which way should i go??? I was waiting to get into my FD full rank not probie or junior. So i took EMS courses. And moved quickly in my dept where i was accepted and given some respect. if you were looking to FDNY i hear stay in EMS as EMT or get MEDIC stay clean no trouble with bosses and when a test comes up get that boss to write you letter to take it. then if youdo OK to WELL you get to move ahead of all rest and make lateral move into fire academy. Also your EMS card is PLUS anywhere you go alot more FD's PAID big city small town are making there members get certified to at least EMT. So you will be one up. if you keep national registry thats even better. for example guy i worked with had MEDIC with NAT REGISTRY he got hired down in ORLANDO company paid for his move had his house unpaced and he works there making 35k more per year. MORE SKILLS YOU HAVE WILL BENEFIT YOU.. get hazmat training get confined space high angle vehicle extrication so if Firefighter or EMS not really what u want with hazmat vehicle extracation confined space stuff get crim justice and get into emergecy services for them. TO MUCH TO THINK ABOUT BUT if u made attempt to take this class DONT EVER GIVE IT UP JUST FOR BENEFIT OF YOUR FAMILY. say u get medic cert you can save that family member before anyone else arrives. I have been in EMS as MEDIC 12 years 4 as EMT i have IV bag cardiac bag intubation bag AED. so my family alone has1000x better chance of surviving any serious medical emergency. so dont ever give it up join a local vollie dept that offers to cover recert if police force doesnt then u give then 10% of month calls in small areas that could be 1-5 calls month in busy could be 20-100 a month. LOOK AROUND DCFD I HEAR TAKING APPLICATIONS> FDNY looking I AMNOT BEING RACIST but female hispanic or black male or female has better shots right now of getting on job. as medic you open additional avenues. say you dont want to work street you can get into certain prograns to get XRAY TECH LPN or RN cause your medic class has credits that carry over. you could o phlebotomy for hospital alot to offer and once medic status can look for then EKG tech to watch strips in ICU for nurses. TEACH EMS if u maintain over 85 on written in EMT and ALS section. long future in many areas.. last is dispatcher if you are in big city with medical and fire experience look for county or state jobs in dispatch for FD PD that is great money easy no major stress. But it all started with that EMT card and basic FD certs.
