NEW YORK, NY

HELL'S HUNDRED ACRES...AGAIN!

FDNY fought it first 5th Alarm of the New Year in a neighborhood that has seen more than its share of the "Big One's" over the years.

At 2203 Saturday, January 21, 2006, Ladder 20 responded to investigate a Class E alarm at 573 Broadway at Prince St. Upon their arrival at 2207, they asked for a 10-75. Battalion 2 special called an additional engine and truck, then quickly transmitted a 2nd Alarm. Division 1 followed that up with a 3rd Alarm. By 2330, 5 alarms had been transmitted, filling the SoHo neighborhood with apparatus of every shape and size. The usual Saturday night crowd that fills the areas shops, restaurants and clubs were joined by hundreds of firefighters and buffs for a dogfight of a fire that traveled up numerous voids from the first floor to the third floor before companies could confine and extinguish the fire. Heavy smoke spewed from the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building for hours, but no fire was ever visible to sidewalk onlookers. The fire building was a 6 story brick commercial structure at 569-575 Broadway, measuring 100 x 200 and running the length of Prince St. on the south to Mercer St. in the rear. The former quarters of Eng. Co. 13 and Lad. Co. 20 are opposite the rear of the building.

5 handlines operated and 5 aerial devices were raised, including Lad. Co. 20 fully extending its stick to the roof. Gong Club members Frank Bohrman and Jim Carey responded from quarters, Billy Ladell, on duty, responded with and operated the Field Comm and I responded from my office at 116 John St., Manhattan. A photo of the scene and Billy at work are attached.

Canadian Fire Capt Killed

A Fire Captain in Montreal was killed in a building fire this morning. Reports are that the fire was initially reported around 3:50 am on the first floor of a 3 story occupied apartment building in the north end of Montreal. The first alarm was committed to rescue and interior operations and a second alarm was transmitted. The 3rd and 4th alarms were transmitted at 4:24 with a report of firefighters missing. Initially there were three missing, however two managed to escape. One firefighter had minor second degree burns and has been released from the hospital. The Captain was found later inside the building and tragically lost his life. Initial reports indicate that they were caught in a flashover.

This is the first LODD for the Montreal Fire Department since 1992. Additional when we get it. As always, our deepest thoughts and prayers go out to the MFD and especially the families involved.

Take Care-BE CAREFUL,
BillyG

Miami Valley Breaking News sends out incident notifications of all types of fires, multiple alarm fire, hazardous materials incidents, several different types of EMS incidents, including MVC's with entrapment, MCI's, shootings and stabbings. We have also just begun sending law enforcement incidents, like pursuits, armed robbery and SWAT call-out, to name a few. Our software allows us to send directly to Nextel, Arch Wireless and Ameritech, and to all other wireless devices as an email.

MVBN sends incidents notifications on a county-by-county basis. We have three different groups for each county, which are, fire, EMS and law enforcement, and we also send daytime (7am - 10pm) and nighttime (10pm - 7am) notifications, which allows our members to use a work pager/cell phone to receive information from us, without being disturbed at night.

Our current coverage area includes the following counties in Ohio and northern Kentucky: - Boone (KY), Butler, Campbell (KY), Champaign, Clark, Columbiana, Darke, Delaware, Franklin, Greene, Hamilton, Kenton (KY), Logan, Madison, Mahoning, Miami, Montgomery, Portage, Preble, Trumbull, Union, and Warren. For the counties not listed, we have an "other" group. We also send out Amber Alerts and incoming National incident notifications from other groups around the country.
