just wondering if anyone may know of any companies that do FI around the NY metropolitan area, Long Island especially. Im a NYC fireman looking to do this on the side. I have a bachelors degree in Fire Investigation another in Fire Science Administration another in Fire and Occupational Safety and a minr in Criminal Justice. Its very hard to become a NYC fire marshal due to city cutbacks so Id like to try private firms or maybe townships looking for fire marshals. Id be able to do building inspections as well. Just thought Id put it out there. If anyone could help out that would be great, thanks.

Just so we can put this encouraging post in perspective, this is from your first post:

To answer your question yea I just transferred to UNH.
Through some connections I made at the firehouse I scored a Part Time fire marshal gig with the local office during the summer months. You def. have the credentials you just have to get out and meet the right people. I would start out with your own insurance company and ask who does their investigations or talk to the local chief fire marshal about a part-time position. I'll probably be in the same boat you are if I get hired in the city. Im looking into getting my insurance adjusters certificate or do home inspections...The local government and big corporations like part timers because they dont have to pay benefits,401k,etc...

If indeed you are an FDNY member you know you can not work a side job that has anything to do with the fire service. Look it up, it's in the reg's.

i thought you can as long as its not in your response area and you can't have a conflict of interest. I know a chief and a couple of his buddies looking into the same thing.

oh yeah, and someone had a FDNY parking placard personalized with your company on it and a PD placard and blocked our rig from turning out of quarters the other day. Can't remember the car though.

I believe it is an insurance job first of all. And what about all the vollie chiefs on LI? They get paid and that is a fire service. Thanks again for posting though.

I doubt the union rules are enforced. The entire suffolk county fire academy would lose all its intstructors...Vollie chiefs on Long Island get paid? Where at?

wow, i'm studying fire investigation at john jay college, and i'm a lay person (legal secretary), i knew that opportunities in the field were minimal, but if YOU'RE having a problem getting a position within the field then looks like i might be doomed. i was thinking however, that perhaps opportunities could be found within the newly created "homeland security department." i'm sure that science degree in fire investigation could be worth its weight in gold there, i intend to look there for a position when i finally graduate. you might want to touch base with professors flannery or corbett over at john jay college, they might know of a few good leads. good luck at any rate.

good luck to you also. Don't wanna tell you that its easy to get hired but its not. I tried. Everyone wants you to have years worth of experience before they hire you. Which I think sucks because if nobody hires you, how are you supposed to get experience? Good luck anyway. FDNY test this October.
