Might want to make a note that New Amsterdam is now known as New York.1648 - First fire wardens appointed, New Amsterdam. The four are charged with the responsibility of checking residential chimneys and levying fines as necessary.

Old United Fire Co.
Can anyone tell me about the Old United Fire Co. dating back to the 1880's. My husbands Great Grandfather was part of that and we are looking for any information that someone might have. This was in the Norfolk VA area.

Firefighting History Timeline
My great-grandfather, Edward O'Sullivan, invented a horse collar for fire stations (patent no. 171,190, December 14, 1875). The collar was suspended from the ceiling and would drop down onto the horse thereby increasing the speed at which "engines" could leave the station.

5500 BCE First Ambulance was made out of rock and serviced the prehistoric town of Bedrock.
I am now a past chief and the views, opinions, and comments are mine and mine alone. I do not speak for any department or in any official capacity. Although, they would be smart to listen to me.

"The education of a firefighter and the continued education of a firefighter is what makes "real" firefighters. Continuous skill development is the core of progressive firefighting. We learn by doing and doing it again and again, both on the training ground and the fireground."
