Next Entrance Examination June 10, 2006
Thank you for your interest in the Boston Fire Department. The Date of the examination will be held June 10, 2006. The application deadline is April 24, 2006. Apply on line with Visa or Mastercard at: www.mass.gov/civilservice.
* Please note: There will be an additional $25 processing fee for applications received after this date. Applications will not be accepted after May 15, 2006.
The following information will serve as a guide in pursuing a career with the Boston Fire Department.
To apply to take the next entrance examination, call the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Human Resources Division at (617) 878-9895 to request an application. Their office hours are from 8:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The entrance examination is administrated by the State of Massachusetts. This examination is given approximately every two years at various locations throughout the State. The State charges a fee, currently $75.00, to take the written examination. The examination itself is a general aptitude test. A study guide is given to each applicant to assist in preparation for the examination. To find out more about the next examination, visit or write to the following:

Qualifications for the City of Boston at the time of the test
You must be at least nineteen (19) years of age at the time of the application deadline and be younger than thirty-two (32) as of the application deadline. Those persons who have served on active duty in the military may add those years served to the age thirty-two (32) limit, to a maximum of four (4) years.
You must be a resident of the City of Boston at least one (1) year prior to the examination date to qualify for residency preference. Applicants who have resided in the City of Boston for an entire twelve month period immediately preceding the date of examination are entitled to be placed on the eligible list for Boston ahead of any non-residents.
Qualifications for the City of Boston for appointment
Pass a written test for Fire Fighter administrated by the State.
Pass a Physical Abilities test administrated by the State.
Pass a character background investigation.
Meet medical fitness requirements.
Have a valid Massachusetts driver's license
The Boston Fire Department hires on average 50 Fire Fighters a year. These numbers are based on attrition rates of the Department. These numbers, however, could go up or down based on the Departmentís budget in any given year.
