    Default Grants

My fire department covers a small rural town with a population of 6,000 and appr. 12sq miles, our budget is appr. $65,000.00. Besides the Fire Act grant what are some other grants that we may apply for?

Here are a few other grants that you can take a look at.

Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER): http://firegrantsupport.com/safer/

Fire Prevention and Safety Grants (FP&S): http://firegrantsupport.com/fp_about.aspx

    Rural Fire Assistance Program: http://www.nifc.gov/rfa/

    Operation Ranger (ATV): http://www.ussmokeless.com/operation_ranger.cfm

    USDA Emergency Responders Initiative: http://www.rurdev.usda.gov/rhs/cf/Em...ders_initi.htm

This list is by far from exhaustive.

There are grants for AEDs. There are private sector or foundation grants that you may be eligible to apply for. If there is a Walmart in your area they will be a good source for funding. What you will find it takes a lot of work and time to locate these types of grants and apply for them.

My research has found that a vast majority of the private or foundation grants require you to be a 501 (c) 3 organization; a non-profit. If you are not a 501 (c) 3 organization (municipal departments are not) you will need a fiscal agent (a 510 (c) 3 organization) such as a Rotary Club, to work with you on your behalf.

There is plenty of funding out there, you just need to find it and apply for it. Good luck.

I constantly maintain a "real time" list of grants that are open and available for fire departments on my website here: http://www.chiefsupply.com/grants/opengrants.html

Here are a few more ideas:

    1) Contact your State's Department of Natural Resources and ask about a 50/50 match grant for fire equipment called the Volunteer Fire Assistance Grant.

    2) Tums First Responder Grants to Firefighters (www.firstresponder.org).

    3) Pioneer Hybrids offers community grants to fire departments. These are small 50/50 grants, here are some activities my local f.d.'s have written for:

    a) Air Bags
    b) Vehicle and Machinery Stabilization

Contact your local seed rep. for more info or contact Pioneer's Corporate Headquarters.

Here are a few other agencies to contact in your area that may be able to help with project specific funding: Elks Club, Moose Club, Knights of Columbus, Rotary, FOE, Kiwanis, local power companies, natural gas pipelines, grain elevators, banks,etc......the list is endless. If you are going to hit these people up for funding, have a specific project in mind and have a specific dollar amount ready. It is always a good idea to present them with a cover letter, proposal with an estimated budget and timeline. Usually these folks are helpful with full or partial projects of $10K or less.

    Good luck and happy hunting!

rfd599, you need to update some of your information. The TUMS grant is no longer in existance since TUMS pulled out of it. They are searching for a new sponsor.

    ktb9780-

Thanks for the info, I didn't realize that they had discontinued this program. We took an order from an F.D. last fall that had received these monies. Thanks for the info.
